Turkish Super Lig, the last four matches scheduled for today. There is still a verdict to be decided: news and predictions
Turkish Super Lig 2022-23 concludes today. The four scheduled matches put an end to a league heavily affected by the catastrophic earthquake that struck a large area of Turkey last winter and forced two teams, Gaziantep and Hatayspor, to withdraw prematurely from the tournament. As a result, the schedule was shortened and many matches ended 3-0 on aggregate.
But let’s come to the verdicts. Zaniolo’s Galatasaray were crowned champions of Turkey a week ago: the mathematical victory came on 30 May with a rounded win over Ankaragucu, and the team sealed their triumph – their first title after a four-year drought – on Sunday in the derby, which they won 2-0 against Fenerbahçe, who are now projected to reach the final of the national cup, scheduled for the weekend against Basaksehir. All that remains now is to decide which team will join relegated Umraniyespor, who will be on the pitch today against Istanbulspor, who need only win to secure their place in the Super Lig. Fatih Tekke’s men are masters of their own destiny, with a point advantage over direct rival Giresunspor, who are simultaneously engaged against Antalyaspor.
Istanbulspor one step away from safety
If Istanbulspor and Giresunspor end up on equal points, the discriminating factor is the direct matches, which are perfectly tied.
And then the goal difference could be decisive: at the moment, however, both are at -20. Should the balance remain even after the last ninety minutes, the goals scored would be looked at. And, for now, Istanbulspor has a slight advantage: 43 against 40. In any case, a ‘non-win’ by the yellow and black team seems very unlikely, as they face a team that has long since resigned itself to relegation and has only won once in their last eight matches. Giresunspor should also win, as Antalyaspor have salvation in their pockets after winning by default in the last round. In the other two matches scheduled for today, Besiktas is expected to win: the third-placed Bianconeri are likely to get the better of Konyaspor. Vincenzo Montella’s Adana Demirspor will also avoid defeat as they prepare to end their season at home to Ankaragucu, another team with no goals.
