Turkey-Wales, Euro 2024 qualifiers: TV, line-ups, predictions

by Mike

Turkey-Wales is a match on the fourth day of Group D of Euro 2024 qualifiers and is played on Monday at 20:45: predictions.

It is impossible to make a provisional assessment of Group D, the one that in theory should be the preserve of Croatia. Yes, because Zlatko Dalic’s selection, favourite for first place, was involved in the Final Four of the Nations League this weekend, where they finished second behind Spain, who won only on penalties.

While waiting for Modric and co. to recover, Turkey took advantage and now look down on everyone, albeit momentarily. The men led by Germany’s Stefan Kuntz archived their home defeat to the Croatians last March with a resounding 2-3 success in Latvia. It was a match that turned out to be much more complicated than expected, and was resolved at the last gasp: a goal from Kahveci in the 95th minute, in full added time, allowed the national team of the crescent moon and the star to get the better of the tough Latvians. Another selection aspiring to second place – always bearing in mind that the first is ‘booked’ by Croatia – is Wales, who, however, after a good start, fell disastrously at home against Armenia (2-4). It was a crushing defeat for Robert Page and his men, who had even managed to break the deadlock after just ten minutes of play.

Dragons who made life difficult for themselves, as a defeat in Turkey would mean almost irreversibly compromising qualification.

In the event of a win, however, Wales would rise to seven, overtaking the Turks: it will not be easy, considering that away from home the British are generally not as effective as in front of their home crowd. Their last away victory was in October 2021, when they got the better of Estonia. The record, however, instils confidence in Wales, who have won four times out of seven confrontations. The last time was at Euro 2020, when the two sides were drawn in the same group as Italy, with the Dragons coming out on top 2-0.

The prediction

Turkey have so far only lost to the strongest team in the group, Croatia. Wales, on the other hand, have just suffered a humiliating slip-up against Armenia, which highlighted the Brits’ problems in the non-possession phase: in their last 11 matches, they have only once kept their goal unbroken. We expect a Turkish success in a match with at least one goal on each side and more than two goals overall.

Turkey-Wales line-up probables

  • TURKEY (4-2-3-1): Gunok; Celik, Demiral, Bardakci, Kadioglu; Calhanoglu, Kokcu; Under, Guler, Akturkoglu; Nayir.
  • GALLES (4-2-3-1): Ward; Roberts, Mepham, Rodon, Williams; Ampadu, Ramsey; Brooks, Wilson, James; Johnson.

POSSIBLE RESULT: 2-1
