Switzerland v Romania, Euro 2024 qualifiers: TV, line-ups, predictions

by Mike

Switzerland-Romania is a match from the fourth day of Euro 2024 qualifying Group I and is played on Monday at 20:45: predictions.

As predicted, Switzerland is on a full points lead in Group I of the Euro 2024 qualifiers. Three wins in as many matches for the Swiss, but what a struggle against little Andorra on Friday. Leading by two goals after 30 minutes of play, Murat Yakin’s selection failed to find the goal that would have set the seal on the game, allowing the Principality’s side to open the scoring in the second half despite almost total domination in terms of ball possession.

Switzerland nonetheless brought home a crucial victory, which brings the coveted pass to the German European Championships one step closer. In this group there do not seem to be any selections on paper stronger than Roberto Mancini’s executioners of Italy in the last World Cup qualifiers. And the one that could give them a hard time at the moment is Romania, their next opponent in Lucerne. Edward Iordanescu’s men are the only unbeaten side, along with Switzerland and Kosovo, with two wins and a draw. In the first two days, however, they benefited from the favourable calendar, beating Andorra and Belarus, certainly not two battleships. On the other hand, the Pristina match against Kosovo proved to be tough and fraught with pitfalls, with Kosovo proving to be a selection that is by no means easy to deal with. A zero-zero that, considering the ranking position, was well received by the Tricolorii, now the main candidate for second place.

First level test for Romania

Romania will have to watch their backs above all against Israel, who came back with the three points in the last round from their challenge against Belarus, which they overturned after going into a disadvantage.

The Israelis will now face the least competitive selection in the group, Andorra, and in the event of a victory and subsequent defeat by Romania in Switzerland, they would leapfrog the team led by coach Iordanescu into second place. As far as the line-up is concerned, Yakin should confirm Basel striker Amdouni, who did not make the absent Embolo regret it in the previous match. The two teams have not faced each other since 2016: it finished 1-1 in the group stage of the French European Championship.

The Prediction

Switzerland is far superior to Romania at the moment. And even with a few too many absences, they should comfortably win the Lucerne match. The total goals will most likely be at least three.

The Switzerland v Romania line-up probables

  • SWISS (4-3-3): Sommer; Lotomba, Akanji, Schar, Rodriguez; Freuler, Zakaria, Xhaka; Amdouni, Seferovic, Vargas.
  • ROMANIA (4-3-3): Moldovan; Manea, Dragusin, Burca, Oprut; Marin, Baluta, Stanciu; Morutan, Puscas, Man.
