Slovenia-Denmark, Euro 2024 qualifiers: TV, line-ups, predictions

by Mike

Slovenia-Denmark is a match on the fourth day of Group H of the Euro 2024 qualifiers and is played on Monday at 20:45: predictions.

Denmark have immediately returned to winning ways after their incredible defeat in Kazakhstan last March, but in Group H the qualification games remain wide open after the first three days. Four national teams – in addition to the Danes, Finland, Slovenia and the Kazakhs themselves lead the standings – are on six points, while Northern Ireland and San Marino seem to have already dropped out of the race for the top two places.

On the fourth day Kasper Hjulmand’s selection, the big favourite for the first place in the group, will try to take the lead in Ljubljana against Slovenia. Last Friday, Denmark did not deliver the convincing performance expected after the Kazakh collapse, but Eriksen and his team-mates limited themselves to a narrow win against the hostile Northern Irish, who were beaten 1-0 thanks to a goal from Wind. But if the Britons had come out of the Parken with a point in their pocket, they would have stolen absolutely nothing, as they had (and wasted) several chances to level the scores. They even managed to do so, before Var cancelled out the goal of the possible 1-1 to Marshall, who had found the back of the net in the 99th minute. The Danes therefore won but did not fully convince, in perfect continuity with the disappointing results of the last World Cup, which saw them go out of the group stage.

Slovenia are back on earth

Facing them will be a Slovenia who are suddenly back on earth after their opening two victories over Kazakhstan and San Marino.

The men led by Matjaz Kek collapsed on their first test of a certain level, losing the direct clash with Finland (2-0) and seeing a positive streak that had lasted eight games, including friendlies with Romania and Montenegro, come to an end. It was since the match against Norway a year ago that Slovenia had not run out of goals. Nothing, however, is compromised: Bijol and his team-mates have a good chance of qualifying, and should they succeed it would be the first time since the Belgian-Dutch European Championship in 2000.

The prediction

Slovenia have always won in their last three matches in front of their home crowd, and it will be no easy task for an inconsistent Denmark to return from Ljubljana with the three points in their pockets. Both teams are likely to score on at least one occasion.

The likely line-up for Slovenia-Denmark

  • SLOVENIA (4-3-3): Belec; Karnicnik, Brekalo, Bijol, Balkovec; Zajc, Gnezda Cerin, Lovric; Stojanovic, Verbic, Sesko.
  • DENMARK (4-2-3-1): Schmeichel; Andersen, Kjaer, Christensen, Maehle; Hojbjerg, Eriksen; Skov Olsen, Wind, Damsgaard; Hojlund.

POSSIBLE RESULT: 1-1
