No national team for Antonio Conte: “Choice forced between Inter and Roma”

by Lea

Where Antonio Conte will end up, nobody knows: there are those who think he wants to stay at least a year, those who see him back at Inter and those who associate him with Roma.

Jacopo Volpi, deputy director of RAI Sport, spoke to the microphones of calciomercato.it, broadcast on the Twitch TVPLAY channel, to have his say on the future of Antonio Conte. Surprisingly, Volpi reduces Conte’s shortlist of possible destinations to two options: Inter Milan and Roma.

‘He was on deadline with Tottenham,’ explained the Tuscan journalist, ‘and he left in a hurry. I think he was stressed in all respects. Let’s not forget that he also did an accelerated recovery to return to the bench, but it did him no good. He’s not a national team coach, and maybe he really wants to stop for a while’.

‘But I believe,’ Volpi continued, ‘that if a strong club with an important squad made him an offer he would immediately get back in the game. I think that to make him an offer could be Juventus, of course, but above all Inter and maybe even Roma, if Mourinho decides to go. I don’t think he goes elsewhere. It seems to me that he has too much desire for football to stop’.

Jacopo Volpi knows Italian football well, so his feelings must be trusted. A historic Italian journalist, TV presenter and sports commentator, he has met or interviewed Conte hundreds of times. He hardly ever makes predictions. And when he does, it is because he has quite clear ideas.

Conte: the future is a choice between Inter and Roma

Both the Nerazzurri and the Giallorossi are struggling financially. And this could be the main problem. Someone like Conte demands a technical project that lives up to his expectations: he does not coach to build but to win immediately. Moreover, it seems that he didn’t part on the best terms with Marotta.

Fundamentally, Inter will be looking for a young coach with tolerable wage demands: the preferred profiles, in this sense, should be Thiago Motta (who, however, is also liked by Atalanta and PSG) and Juric.

On the Roma side, in the last few hours, instead, there has been talk of a possible openness of José Mourinho to staying on. If this were to be confirmed, only the Nerazzurri club would remain in the game for Conte, who, however, does not seem willing to rehire him.

The Salento coach, fresh from his divorce from Tottenham, could also, according to some, replace Mancini at the national team. But for Volpi it is difficult for Conte to return as coach: he did not like the experience.
