Lithuania-Hungary is a match on the eighth day of Euro 2024 qualifying Group G and is played Tuesday at 8:45 p.m.: predictions.
The two victories over a selection chock-full of talent like Serbia in the space of just over two months represent another small masterpiece by Marco Rossi’s Hungary.
With three matches still to be played, the Magyars enjoy the lone first place, are undefeated (4 wins and a draw) and could peel off the pass to the final stage of the European Championship should they win over Lithuania. Yes, because at that point they could no longer be joined by Montenegro, which has 5 points less and in this round will be on stage in Belgrade against their Serbian cousins. Another small effort, in short, toward Germany 2024: for Hungary, now about a decade out of a very long period of anonymity, it would be the third consecutive participation in a continental review after those of 2016 in France and 2020 in the traveling edition (played, however, in 2021 because of the pandemic). Two years ago the men led by Italian Rossi surprised everyone when they were able to limit the damage in a group that was on paper impossible with Germany, France and Portugal.
Maximum attention, however, to a Lithuania that in theory would still be in the running for one of the top two spots after their fine victory last Saturday in Bulgaria.
First win in six matches for the Baltic representative team coached by Edgaras Jankauskas, which in the Sofia match took advantage of the Bulgarians’ numerical inferiority from the end of the first half to return to success (0-2) and put an end to a withdrawal that had lasted since 2021 – exactly two years – as far as official matches were concerned. Lithuania, which must get the better of Hungary and hope for a defeat by Serbia to keep its hopes up.
The prediction
Hungary, galvanized by its double success over the Serbs, will also easily file away Lithuania, thus clinching qualification well in advance. As in the first leg, the Magyars (best defense so far with only two goals conceded) may be able to keep their goal unbeaten as well.
