Ligue 1, predictions on penultimate day: what PSG need

by Mike

Ligue 1, France’s top league has also reached the final stages. PSG are one step away from the title: predictions

Ligue 1, like the other major European leagues, draws to a close. The penultimate day is occasionally staged all on a Saturday, with the ten matches being played at the same time, at 9pm. And it could be the decisive one for the title.

All eyes are on the Stade de la Meinau in Strasbourg, where top-ranked Psg are on the scene, one step away from their 11th title. Six points ahead of Lens, a victory would confirm Christophe Galtier’s men as French champions. But even a draw would, in fact, make a comeback impossible for the Giallorossi: in the event of a tie, in fact, Mbappé and his companions can count on the better goal difference, clearly in their favour. The Alsatians, thanks to an excellent end to the season, have secured their salvation: it is not yet mathematical, but the fourth-last Nantes is -6 with two days left to play and, compared to Strasbourg, has a worse goal difference. Psg, despite the heavy midfield absences, should avoid defeat, but will hardly be able to keep their goal unbroken against a team that is experiencing a good moment of form, especially from the point of view of scoring. Victory will come on time for Lens, who are also likely to score a good number of goals against relegated Ajaccio: they could score between three and six.

The other match predictions

Among the most interesting matches, involving both the fight for Europe and salvation, is Lille-Nantes. Paulo Fonseca’s side must defend fifth place from the assaults of Rennes and Lyon, -1 and -4 respectively.

The victory in the last round against Marseille, the fourth in a row in front of their own public, bodes well for the challenge against the disastrous yellow-greens, who would now be relegated to Ligue 2. Nantes have not won since February and are fresh from yet another embarrassment (0-3 with Montpellier). Salvation is just one point away, but Lafont and his team-mates are not masters of their own destiny: they must win and hope for a defeat by Auxerre. Auxerre, on the other hand, have a better chance of scoring at home to a Toulouse side already safe, satiated by their Coupe de France victory and with nothing more to ask of this championship. Goals galore are expected in the match between Rennes and Monaco, with the hosts obliged to win if they want to keep believing in Europe. But the Monegasques, who are only three points ahead of Rennes, cannot sleep soundly either. Lyon, who are favourites over Reims, also believe, while Marseille, theoretically not yet out of the race for second place, could concede at least one goal in the match with Brest. Clermont, who have won five games in a row at home, are also likely to win.

  • Lyon (in Lyon-Reims)
