Germany v Peru is a friendly and will be played on Saturday at 20:45: odds, predictions, statistics, insights.
The big absentee of these Euro 2024 qualifiers, which started a few days ago, is Germany. And the reason is very simple: the Germans will have the burden and honour of organising the continental event, which is why they are already qualified by right.
From now until the start of the European Championship, therefore, the selection led by head coach Hansi Flick will almost exclusively face friendly matches. One has always wondered whether this is a good or a bad thing when it comes to national teams as emblazoned as the Mannschaft. The fact is that the former Bayern Munich coach is well aware that he will have to change course from what he has seen in recent years, including the disappointing Qatari expedition: for the second time in a row, Germany failed to get past the group stage at a World Cup. Last November it was Japan who mocked them, even qualifying as first in a group in which the Germans should have qualified without any problems arm in arm with Spain. In between there was also a European Championship – the touring one won by Italy – which saw Germany go out in the round of 16 through England, in the match that decreed the end of the very long Joachim Low era. Drastic changes are therefore urgently needed: in view of the first friendlies, Flick has called up several new faces: from Wolf to Vagnoman, from Nmecha to Berisha, passing through Freiburg’s Schade or Milan’s Thiaw.
Flick’s mini-revolution
In goal, given Neuer’s injury, ter Stegen will go, while the captain’s armband will be worn by Kimmich. There is no Muller – the veteran didn’t say goodbye to the national team but wasn’t called up – and neither is the injured Musiala.
In attack, the selector will certainly give space to Havertz and Werner, but Wirtz and Fullkrug will also come off the bench. The first test is against Peru, just back from the scalding elimination from the inter-zone play-offs to enter the World Cup: the red-and-whites lost on penalties against Australia, missing out on qualification for Qatar 2022. On the bench there is no longer Gareca, but Juan Maximo Reynoso. There are many novelties in the convocations of the new selector, who in any case intends to continue to put his faith in the oriundo Lapadula, always a staple in Blanquirroja’s attack.
The prediction
In spite of taking the field with a largely experimental line-up, Germany should have no problem adjusting to Peru. We expect a German victory in a match in which the South Americans are also likely to score.
