Germany-Ukraine is a friendly and will be played on Monday at 18:00: likely formations, predictions, statistics, insights

After the long club season is over, it’s the national teams that take centre stage, with the Nations League finals, Euro 2024 qualifiers and various friendlies.

One of the first to take the field is Hansi Flick’s Germany, already qualified by right for the next continental event, which it will have the burden and honour of hosting. This is why, between now and the European Championship, the Mannschaft will compete almost exclusively in friendly matches. The first outing is against Ukraine, then Kimmich and his teammates will also face Poland and Colombia. Matches that will provide the former Bayern Munich coach with important indications, but which will above all serve to understand which players he can rely on. After the disappointing Qatari expedition, in fact, the coach is trying to start a new cycle. Neither Muller nor Gnabry have been called up and the feeling is that the changes are set to continue. Flick meanwhile announced a change from a tactical point of view: from now on he will favour the three-man defence, with the clear intention of mainly exploiting the outside lanes. Germany last took the field last March, losing 3-2 in the luxury friendly against Belgium. A few days earlier, however, it had beaten Peru (2-0) without any major problems.

Ukraine start again with Rebrov

Ukraine will also use the test in Bremen to build up minutes in their legs as they have two tricky matches against North Macedonia and Malta in the coming days.

Rebrov

Rebrov

Serhij Rebrov, former Dinamo Kiev striker and newly appointed selector, will have to aim to win both if he wants to have a chance of qualifying in one of the most complicated groups, in which there are also England and Italy, who have ‘booked’ the first two places. Ukraine have so far only played against the English, returning from Wembley with a fairly clear defeat (2-0). And the ranking now sees it in last place in Group C, arm in arm with Malta. The proceeds of the match will be used to help refugees and victims of the conflict with Russia that has been battering the Ukrainian country for a year and a half now.

The Prediction

Although it is only a friendly, Flick has asked his team for a convincing performance. That should come, against a Ukraine struggling with offensive problems – they have not scored in three of their last four matches – as well as lacking one of their best players, Zinchenko. The Germans are likely to score two to four goals.

Germany v Ukraine likely line-ups

  • GERMANY (3-4-3): ter Stegen; Ginter, Rüdiger, Schlotterbeck; Hofmann, Kimmich, Goretzka, Raum; Sané, Füllkrug, Musiala.
  • UCRAINE (4-2-3-1): Trubin; Zabarnyi, Svatok, Matvienko, Mykolenko; Stepanenko, Ihnatenko; Malinovskyi, Sudakov, Mudryk; Yaremchuk.

POSSIBLE RESULT: 2-0
