Domenico Tedesco’s “new” Belgium has won three out of four matches so far but a draw with Austria last June does not allow them to be on full points but more importantly to sleep soundly. The Red Devils have 10 points, the same as Ralf Rangnick’s dangerous Austria, which is doing very well. The other threat is Sweden, which is further behind, but still to be taken with caution.
In short, qualification remains well within reach but the math is still a long way off. The next one, meanwhile, is one of those matches that just can’t be missed: in Brussels comes the group’s Cinderella, Estonia, already out of the game along with Azerbaijan with only one point won in 4 days. The Baltics have no pretensions of qualifying and at the moment have managed to avoid defeat exclusively with Azerbaijan. Otherwise, two knockouts from the not insignificant deficit against Belgium (0-3) and Sweden (0-5) and a narrow one at home to Austria (2-1). Lukaku and his teammates, however, have won only on the road. The success that came last Friday in Azerbaijan, however, was less clear-cut than the previous ones: on the Caspian Sea it was decided at the end of the first half by a goal from Carrasco, a former Atletico Madrid outside forward who has just moved to Al-Shabab in Saudi Arabia.
Tedesco is not expected to reshuffle too many cards compared to the challenge with the Azeris: without the injured Courtois and De Bruyne, the trident composed of Bakayoko, Lukaku and Carrasco will be seen again in attack, with new Manchester City purchase Doku ready to take over from the bench. in the middle is a ballot between Tielemans and Mangala: the latter could undermine the player who moved to Aston Villa in the last market session.
