Bayern Munich v Freiburg, German Cup: TV, predictions, line-ups

by Mike

Bayern Munich-Freiburg is a German Cup quarter-final match played on Tuesday at 20:45: predictions.

Thomas Tuchel did not fail to make his debut on the Bavarian bench by displeasing his former team, Borussia Dortmund. The direct clash at the Allianz Arena as usual did not disappoint from the point of view of spectacle, but the final result (4-2) does not say everything about the superiority – after 50 minutes they were already 4-0 up – that was evident between Bayern Munich and the yellow-and-whites, once again empty-handed in the match that counted most.

The German champions immediately turned the page after the defeat – their third of the season – in Leverkusen, taking back the top of the table with authority. They are now two points ahead of their rivals, who will now have to be good enough to hang on to them in anticipation of a possible misstep, averting the risk of a breakaway. The main change from Nagelsmann concerns the tactical outfit: Tuchel has returned to using the four-man defence, with the two centre-backs (Goretzka and Kimmich) behind the trio formed by Sané, Muller (the captain scored two goals against Borussia) and Coman. Before thinking about the stellar quarter-final with Manchester City in the Champions League, Bayern Munich have to face their German Cup engagement with Freiburg, the league’s fourth-strongest side.

Freiburg, the last precedent is not reassuring

The new coach, according to rumours on the eve of the match, is inclined to line up many starters, showing that he does not want to take the national cup game lightly.

Those players who didn’t start from 1′ last Saturday, including Cancelo, Musiala, Gnabry and Mané, should take the field. There is also a minimum of turnover for Freiburg, who will face Bayern Munich again in the league in just four days’ time. Christian Streich’s team does not have good memories of their last visit to the Bavarian capital: In October, they suffered a heavy defeat at the Allianz Arena against the reigning German champions, who beat Grifo and his teammates by five goals (5-0). Recently eliminated from the Europa League by Juventus, Freiburg maintained their fourth place but in the last two days did not go beyond two draws with Hertha Berlin and Mainz, both matches ending 1-1.

The Prediction

Bayern Munich have just given a show of strength and do not want to make any missteps even in the German Cup, a competition that is not at the top of Tuchel’s and the club’s thoughts at the moment. Freiburg usually melt away like snow in the sun with the big teams, and the most recent precedent suggests a comfortable victory for the Bavarians, who should be able to score two to four goals as they did against Borussia Dortmund.
