Nets from Darder and Melamed on Sunday kept Espanyol alive as they ran away at home to Rayo Vallecano. An essential victory (1-2) to continue chasing salvation: the Madrid trip was in fact the last resort and the Catalans, with their backs to the wall, rose to the occasion, winning and moving back to -1 from fourth-last place.
Before the midweek round, the standings are as follows: Espanyol still penultimate with 34 points; one less than Real Valladolid and Getafe, likely the three teams that, barring any twists and turns, will remain in the fight until the last day. More detached is Cadiz, at 38: the Andalusians took a possibly decisive step thanks to their victory in the direct clash with Valladolid. Luis Garcia’s men also believe in it, who in these last three days will have to deal with an Atletico Madrid already sure to take part in the next Champions League but also with Valencia and Almeria, two teams that in the midweek round could achieve arithmetic salvation. Espanyol will be relying on the warmth of the Cornellà crowd, where before the derby with Barcelona – which ended 4-2 for the Blaugrana cousins – it had managed to get two positive results against Getafe and Cadiz while keeping its goal unbroken. The one with the Yellowoblù is the only match since resuming play after the World Cup in which the Catalans have gone without a goal.
Diego Simeone’s team, however, will not show up in Barcelona in flip-flops. Thanks to their 3-0 win over Osasuna, their fourth in the last five days of La Liga, they overtook hated Real Madrid, which was defeated in Valencia. Atletico Madrid on paper has no realistic goals but they know how important it is to finish above their cousins and are likely to do everything they can to come back with three points from Catalonia as well.
