Wolverhampton-West Ham prediction: this result hasn’t happened in 15 years

by Michael

At the bottom of the Premier League table are Wolverhampton and West Ham, still without any points after the first two games of the season. Both teams have had disastrous results: the Wolves have suffered two defeats, first being thrashed by Manchester City (0-4) and then losing narrowly at Bournemouth (1-0); the Hammers, on the other hand, have had two bad performances, conceding a total of eight goals against Sunderland and Chelsea, becoming – albeit temporarily – the worst defense in the tournament.

Will the League Cup lift spirits and boost confidence ahead of the upcoming fixtures? It remains to be seen: the situation seems to be much more delicate at West Ham, with bookmakers tipping manager Graham Potter to be the first manager sacked this season.

Since taking charge of the London side, he has won only five of 21 games, losing 11. The defense is leaking goals and the attack is struggling to score: it is no coincidence that the Hammers have produced only 1.3 xG in the first two rounds. Wolverhampton have not shone offensively either: Vitor Pereira’s men have not only failed to score a single goal, but have also created very little so far. Suffice it to say that only two teams have made fewer touches in the opponent’s area (33) in this early stage of the Premier League.

The prediction

A difficult match to predict, given the turnover and mood of the two teams, both of which have had a terrible start to the season. At this point, we have to rely on previous results: the last draw between Wolves and West Ham, including cups and friendlies, dates back to 2010, a trend that could continue. Both teams are likely to score this time around.

Probable lineups for Wolverhampton-West Ham

WOLVERHAMPTON (3-4-3): Johnstone; Doherty, Mosquera, S. Bueno; Hoever, Bellegarde, André, H. Bueno; Munetsi, Kalajdzic, Arias.
WEST HAM (3-4-2-1): Hermansen; Todibo, Kilman, Aguerd; Wan-Bissaka, Ward-Prowse, Potts, Diouf; Paquetà, Bowen; Fullkrug.

POSSIBLE RESULT: 1-2
