Wimbledon, Musetti occasion: news and predictions Monday, July 8

by Lea

Wimbledon, Italian dreams of his first quarterfinals in a Slam but to advance he will have to overcome young French “giant” Mpetshi Perricard.

Lorenzo Musetti had so far managed to “explore” the second week of a Slam only at Roland Garros. For the tennis player from Carrara two eighth finals in Paris, one in 2021 and the other in 2023. Given his unfamiliarity with grass, it seemed unlikely that he could – at least in the short term – replicate himself at Wimbledon as well, and instead the Italian this year has shown that he has the right weapons to perform well on the grass as well.

After reaching the final at Queen’s and losing to Tommy Paul, the current world number 25 went all the way to the fourth round of the Championships, also taking advantage of a “favorable” draw. In his quadrant were Rublev and Tsitsipas, but the two top 10s went out almost immediately. Musetti prevailed first over Frenchman Lestienne, then won a balanced derby with Darderi, and finally settled the surprise Comesana in four sets. Even in the round of 16 he will start with the favor of the odds, since he will face the young French “giant” Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, the fifth player in the history of Wimbledon to arrive among the first 16 despite having lost the last round of qualifying and entered the main draw as a lucky loser. Musetti has more experience on his side but the Frenchman with his powerful serve seems to have everything to shine on this surface. The two faced each other in Stuttgart a month ago, also on grass, and it was Musetti who prevailed after winning two tie breaks. We expect a very balanced match this time as well, and if Mpetshi Perricard manages to take the rematch it would not be a surprise.

Fritz, trip Zverev?

In addition to the challenge featuring our own Musetti, the men’s singles draw today provides entertainment. Especially anticipated is the match between Taylor Fritz and Alexander Zverev.

The German, world number four, has been in great form for months now and said before the Championships that he feels he is finally ready to do well on grass as well. Against the U.S., he holds a 5-3 advantage in the previous matches but when they have faced each other on fast surfaces the challenges have always been close. Zverev has beaten the American twice before at Wimbledon (2018 and 2021) but since then Fritz has accumulated a lot of experience on English lawns and this time he might be able to overturn the odds. Also dreaming of the quarters is Australian Alex de Minaur: Frenchman Arthur Fils is a tough nut to crack at the moment but, while conceding at least one set, the Sydney native should get through the round. Today’s program closes with the thrilling generational clash between Nole Djokovic and Holger Rune. The Dane is coming off a hard-fought match with Frenchman Halys, in which he came out on top in the fifth. The Serb, 7-time champion at Wimbledon, is still not 100% but is growing match by match: we bet on him despite having suffered Rune’s game several times in the previous 5 matches (the balance is three wins for Nole and two for the Scandinavian).
