Wimbledon, first round: news and predictions Tuesday, July 2

by Thorsten

Wimbledon, on Day 2 of the Championships the spotlight is on two veterans Djokovic and Murray: predictions.

On Day 2 of the Championships, while waiting for the Italian derby between Jannik Sinner and Matteo Berrettini – scheduled for tomorrow – the spotlight is on two winners of this Slam, Novak Djokovic (7-time champion) and Andy Murray (2-time champion).

The Serb in recent weeks has been in a race against time to be able to take part in Wimbledon after meniscus surgery. He has repeatedly said in interviews that he feels fine, reiterating that he is ready to compete, even though his last match was at Roland Garros. Happening to be in the lower part of the scoreboard, the more affordable one, in the opener against Czech Kopriva he should achieve a comfortable success. Initially, however, it will not be so easy to find the right rhythm and that is why we expect the number of total games to be more than 28. For Murray, on the other hand, the one against the Czech Machac will most likely be his last appearance on the Central: the Scot, plagued by physical problems, is close to retirement and is unlikely to be able to snatch a set from such a solid opponent as the 23-year-old Beroun native.

Musetti, Nardi and Cobolli are also on the court

Among the Italians in the field today, in addition to Lorenzo Musetti – just back from the final at Queen’s and therefore favored over Frenchman Lestienne – also two young upstarts like Luca Nardi and Flavio Cobolli.

We’re talking about two players who have only been on the main circuit steadily for a few months and certainly don’t know grass inside out. Cobolli, of the two, has perhaps the more difficult task: the Australian Hijikata has much more experience on this surface and starts slightly favored. Nardi, on the other hand, does not play against a “herbivore”-Argentinian Etcheverry is more comfortable on clay-but he could still have his say in a match that does not promise to be short.

England’s Jubb and Japan’s Nishioka could surprise Brazil’s Seyboth Wild and Portugal’s Nuno Borges, respectively, who are unaccustomed to the grass. The same can be said for Russian Safiullin, who did very well at Wimbledon last year (he was eliminated by Sinner), but watch out for Argentine Cerundolo who is always very unpredictable. Dane Rune, on the other hand, is not having a great time and it would not be a surprise if he concedes something to South Korean Kwon. Finally, Chile’s Tabilo is likely to suffer from fatigue after having just won the tournament in Mallorca: Britain’s Evans could take him to the fifth set.
