Wednesday, Jan. 8 predictions: League Cup, Spanish Super Cup and more.

by Mike

Wednesday, Jan. 8 predictions: there’s Tottenham-Liverpool in the League Cup, Athletic Bilbao-Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup and other matches.

The home defeat to Newcastle, the third in the last four games and the tenth in the league, officially opened the crisis at Tottenham. Spurs’ performance, which until Christmas had traveled between highs and lows, has suddenly collapsed in the last two weeks, making the bench on which Australian coach Ange Postecoglou sits even less solid.

Injuries that have hit the defense in particular have made the situation even more difficult, and while not underestimating this cup – Spurs have not won a trophy in a long time and even the League Cup would be fat as well – Liverpool appears superior even with the second lines. The two teams meet again facing each other just a few days after the pyrotechnic 6-3 with which the Reds annihilated Spurs: the goals should come on time this time as well.

Predictions on the other matches

Finished with the Italian Super Cup, the Spanish Super Cup kicks off in Jeddah with the first semifinal facing Athletic Bilbao and Barcelona. For Barça, it is the first level test of the new year: Hansi Flick’s men had not closed out 2024 in the best of ways, squandering the advantage they had accumulated over the previous months over the Madrid-based sides, Real and Atletico, and being overtaken by both. Before the King’s Cup challenge, the blaugrana had cashed in on two defeats, both of them accruing in front of their own fans: the first with newly promoted Leganes and the second with Atletico.

And Athletic? Behind the big three are the Basques, who in 19 days have scored only two points less than Barcelona (36). Ernesto Valverde’s team has not lost since October, considering all competitions, and wants to do well in the Super Cup as well. There are the pressuppositions to witness a balanced match that is anything but a foregone conclusion, given the moment Barcelona is going through: both teams should score at least once.

Victories coming with possible over matches for Galatasaray and Benfica against Basaksehir and Braga for matches concerning the Turkish Cup and Portuguese League Cup.
