US Open, women’s draw: news and predictions Monday, Sept. 2

by Mark

US Open, the Tuscan tennis player will try to subvert predictions against Czech Muchova. Also on the court is number one Swiatek.

Badosa, Navarro, Zheng, and Sabalenka have already earned a pass to the quarterfinals. Today in the Big Apple it’s the turn of the remaining tennis players competing at the top of the scoreboard, including our Jasmine Paolini, number 5 in the world and number one in Italy.

The Lucchese, getting through the third round against Kazakhstan’s Putintseva, set two important records. As of last Saturday, she is the Italian with the most Slam victories in a single season and she also became the only Italian to have hit at least the eighth rounds in the four majors in the same calendar year. Paolini, as she has been doing for the past few months, has no intention of setting herself any limits and will try to subvert the odds even against the talented Czech Karolina Muchova, favored according to the bookmakers. After all, in the three head-to-heads, the Roland Garros 2023 finalist has always prevailed: these are, however, very dated precedents – the last one in 2021 – when the Italian had not yet made the leap. Today the Tuscan has much more experience (she reached the finals at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon in 2024) and could give her a hard time by focusing on her main characteristics, grit and determination.

Brazilian threat for Wozniacki

Another tennis player who, along the lines of Paolini, has made great strides in recent months is Diana Shnaider. The Russian is in great form and is hunting for a rematch in her match with the higher ranked Pegula. The two last met three weeks ago in the semifinals of the Wta 1000 in Toronto, with the U.S. prevailing in two sets (6-4 6-3): this time we might see a more hard-fought match.

On the Italian night, world number one Iga Swiatek will take the court. The Polish champion hasn’t conceded a single set in the first three rounds and she could win in two partials even over Russia’s Ljudmila Samsonova: the powerful serve won’t be enough for the Olenegorsk native to trouble the four-time Roland Garros winner. Finally, a balanced and uncertain match is looming between veteran Caroline Wozniacki and Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia: the Dane in the first three rounds has been perfect but will have to be very careful of the South American, who seems to be back to the one of a few months ago. It would not be a surprise if the challenge is decided in the third set.
