US Open, final quarterfinal passes up for grabs: predictions Monday, Sept. 2

by Michael

US Open, quarterfinal picture completed: Sinner on court in Italian night against US Paul. If he wins, he could face Medvedev.

In the U.S. Open of surprises-already out two of the main favorites for the final victory, Alcaraz and defending champion Djokovic-the picture of the round of 16 is completed today. On the court the tennis players drawn at the top of the scoreboard, the one in which there is world number one Jannik Sinner – the last Italian left in the competition and at this point a big favorite after the unexpected eliminations of the Spaniard and the Serb – who will face the hostile U.S. Tommy Paul.

The South Tyrolean, who got off to a muted start in Flushing Meadows perhaps also because of the doping affair – the Italian was immediately exonerated, as he was unintentionally contaminated by his former physiotherapist – allowed only crumbs to the last two opponents he faced, the American Michelsen and the Australian O’Connell, both of whom he liquidated in three comfortable sets. Everything went smoothly, then, after that first set loss in the first match to the American McDonald.

Paul did not encounter any major obstacles either: excluding the second-round match with Purcell – the Australian retired at 2-0 – the Voorhees native won in four sets over Sonego and Diallo. The one with Sinner is a challenge that shouldn’t hold any surprises, but Paul always knows how to put the big boys he meets on his path in trouble – he got the better of the Italian in 2022 on the grass of Eastbourne with the Italian, only to lose in the other 2 previous matches – and it’s quite likely that he will win at least one set.

Draper vs. Machac: is this the time for the Englishman?

So on the horizon is yet another duel between Sinner and Medvedev, which would have the flavor of an early final. The Russian tennis player – the only U.S. Open winner still remaining in the competition – in the event of a win over Portugal’s Nuno Borges in the quarters would find the Italian, assuming Sinner gets over the Paul hurdle unscathed.

Although still not shining on serve, the Muscovite should be able to settle the case in three sets, although the Lusitanian has made important strides even on a surface as uncongenial to him as concrete. The challenge between Jack Draper and Tomas Machac will certainly be more balanced and hard-fought: both have a great chance, the Englishman among the two is the more talented one – and in our opinion he is favored – but it should not be forgotten that in the three previous ones the Czech has always come out on top. Finally, Australian Jordan Thompson will try to put fellow countryman Alex de Minaur in trouble: the world number ten, so far almost flawless, will have to be very careful, although the precedents comfort him (he is up 4-1).
