Uruguay-Colombia: predictions scorers, shots, cautions

by Lea

Uruguay-Colombia, the name of the other finalist of Copa America 2024 will emerge from the challenge in Charlotte: who will challenge Argentina?

The two teams that have impressed the most in this edition of the Copa America. The one between Uruguay and Colombia is probably the “fairest” semifinal in meritocratic terms, judging by the path of both. The Celeste, reborn thanks to the “Bielsa cure,” dominated their group – three wins out of three – and in the round of 16 took the illustrious scalp of Brazil, beaten on penalties. No longer just “garra” but also a more proactive and aggressive game than in the past. And above all, painstaking organization.

Uruguay scored 9 goals in 4 games but if it made it to the semifinals it also owes it to an iron defense, which so far has only cashed in one goal (the least perforated along with Argentina’s).

On the other hand, Colombia, led by another Argentine coach, former defender Nestor Lorenzo, has shined more in the opponent’s half of the field. The Cafeteros went to “fish out” James Rodriguez, the star of the 2014 World Cup, who was almost desaparecido in Brazil at Sao Paulo: a decision that turned out to be apt, since the former Real Madrid player is drawing soccer, already registering 5 assists (a record for an edition of the Copa America, at the moment shared with Messi) and creating as many as 14 scoring chances. Colombia also faced Brazil, however, they did so in the group stage: drawing 1-1 with the Greenoros on the last day, they avoided being overtaken in first place and gave themselves a softer round of 16 with Panama, overwhelmed 5-0. No one has scored more goals than Lorenzo’s men, already at 11 in their four matches so far.

Bielsa is banking (also) on Nunez

Darwin Nunez in the national team has to deal with a very heavy legacy, that of two phenomenal strikers like Suarez and Cavani. It will be difficult to replicate their numbers in a Celeste jersey, but so far Bielsa’s game seems to enhance the characteristics of the Liverpool striker, who already has two goals in the Copa America.

Against Brazil he failed to swell Alisson’s net but you can’t say he didn’t try: three total shots for him against Seleçao. It is not out of the question that against Colombia he will adjust his aim, ending a two-game fast. Bielsa also relies on Valverde’s forays: the Real Madrid midfielder was the only one to shoot in the match with the Canarinha. In Colombia, on the other hand, we choose Luis Diaz and James Rodriguez, who are likely to register at least 3 and 2 total shots. Also not to be underestimated is fullback Munoz, a factor in the opponent’s half of the field as well. So far the two teams have not collected too many yellow cards: however, given the importance of the stakes a few too many fouls could be committed. In Uruguay, Vina and Gimenez are at risk, among the Colombians Lerma and Sanchez.
