Uruguay-Brazil is a match valid for the quarterfinals of the Copa America and is played on Sunday at 03:00 (Italian time): statistics, probable formations, predictions.
The challenge between these two selections, in the South American football scene, is second only to the great classic between Brazil and Argentina in terms of fascination. Whenever the Seleçao faces Uruguay, the mind of every fan cannot help but go to the legendary Maracanazo of the 1950 Brazilian World Cup, when against all odds the Celeste prevented the Canarinha from celebrating winning the Rimet Cup in front of their own public.
Up for grabs today is a Copa America semifinal, which is certainly not the same thing. But for both it is a very important test. Uruguay has changed its skin since Marcelo “El Loco” Bielsa has been at the helm, challenging what until recently were its principles. The Celeste is in fact the team that has expressed the best soccer in this competition so far along with Colombia.
Valverde and his teammates finished with full points in their group after rifling three goals against Panama, five against Bolivia and narrowly beating the U.S. (0-1) despite having qualification already in the bag. First place, however, did not prevent them from immediately crossing paths with one of the favorites for the final victory, Brazil.
It cannot be said, however, that the Seleçao has shined: Dorival Jr. has managed to fix something compared to his predecessors, but problems remain, despite a strong roster. One win (Paraguay) and two draws for the Greenoro, stopped by Costa Rica (0-0) and Colombia (1-1) and forced to settle for second place in Group D. Brazil, which against Uruguay will have to renounce one of its best men, Vinicius Jr., disqualified for a sum of yellows: the selector will therefore throw into the fray the 2006-born Endrick, who will soon join Vinicius himself in Madrid. In Uruguay, on the other hand, Bielsa’s doubt concerns Maximiliano Araujo, who came off on a stretcher due to a game clash in the match with the USA. Should he forfeit, Cristian Olivera is ready.
The prediction
Between the two selections, the one who convinced the most was certainly Uruguay, which does not start at all beaten against the better-ranked Greenoro, moreover lacking the star Vinicius. There are the prerequisites to witness an enthralling match but we believe that Brazil, which has never lost to the Celeste in the knockout phase in this competition, can at least avoid defeat in regulation time. Both are likely to score on at least one occasion.
