Turkey-Georgia is a match of the first day of the group stage of Euro 2024 and is played on Tuesday at 6 pm: statistics, likely lineups, predictions, TV and streaming.
The first day of the group stage of Euro 2024 concludes with the two matches concerning Group F. It starts with the challenge between Vincenzo Montella’s Turkey and “freshman” Georgia, ready to make its full debut in a final stage of an international event.
For the Caucasians it is, of course, already a great victory to have made it to Germany. Technical commissioner Willy Sagnol has done nothing but carry on and reap the fruits of a work that began years ago. And that has allowed the Georgian football movement to make enormous strides, churning out players of the caliber of Kvicha Kvaratskhelia, undoubtedly the strongest and most representative element of this selection.
An entire country last March touched the sky with one finger in the playoff final with Greece, beaten after penalty kicks. Georgia had actually come close to qualifying for a European championship four years earlier, when they surrendered — again in the playoff final — to North Macedonia. Enthusiasm and the desire to impress will be the main ingredients of this representative in the German expedition. And the hope is to play the role of outsider in a group in which the only certainty, to date, seems to be first place Portugal. “Kvara” and his teammates played only one friendly before their debut, folding Montenegro 3-1. Turkey, on the other hand, has not shined in pre-European friendly matches. Three defeats out of four for the Montella-led national team, whose only draw came in Bologna against Italy. To central the knockout stage goal Calhanoglu and his teammate will have to regain the spirit – but above all the game – of last year, thanks to which they won, with merit, the qualifying round ahead of Croatia (5 wins, 2 draws and one loss).
The latest lineup news
Montella could not bring three potential starters such as Soyuncu, Under and Unal to Germany. Thus, the absence of a defensive mainstay like the Fenerbahçe center-back weighs heavily, but a “real” first forward is also missing: in front, Galatasaray’s Yilmaz, an adapted center forward, will play. Against Georgia, Juventus’ jewel Yildiz will start, surrounded by the other great hope of Turkish soccer, Guler, and Akturkoglu. Pairing up in the median with Calhanoglu will be Ozcan’s turn. In defense is former Sassuolo man Ayhan, bench for Demiral.
Sagnol will opt for a more cautious 3-5-2, with Kvaratskhelia essentially having second-tier duties alongside Metz striker Mikautadze. Bellottaggio in midfield, where Kvekveskiri and Kiteishvili will compete for a shirt, with the former slightly favored over the latter.
The prediction
Georgia, if we exclude the “Neapolitan” Kvaratskhelia and Valencia’s starting goalkeeper Mamardashvili, does not have great individuality but remains a selection that makes tactical organization and compactness its hallmarks. It would be a mistake, therefore, to underestimate it. Turkey has gone a bit astray this calendar year but undoubtedly has more weapons at its disposal than the Georgians and should be able to pocket the first three points in this match. Montella’s selection, moreover, will be playing “at home,” given the massive presence of first- and second-generation Turks in Germany. At least two goals overall are expected at Signal Iduna Park.
