The near-final round of 16 at Wimbledon was evidently a pretty clear signal. Fabio Fognini, at 37 years old, is itching to prove that retirement day is not so close. Collecting as many as possible is the goal of Fognini, who recently said he no longer wants to try his hand at the Challenger circuit in order to climb up the rankings. His desire is to continue playing at a high level, to compare himself with the best. And the challenge with world No. 12 Stefanos Tsitsipas in the Gstaad quarterfinals comes at just the right time. The Greek is in Switzerland to prepare for the Olympics and in the first round cleared an excellent Medjedovic (7-6 6-3) in two sets. The Athens native represents a real black beast for Fognini, who in four previous matches has barely managed to snatch a single set from him.

The precedents speak for themselves. In the two head-to-head matches on clay (Rome 2019 and Monte Carlo 2022) Fognini has collected only a few games against the Athenian. It is difficult for him to break this taboo against a Tsitsipas who has a different pace on this surface, but the excellent performance offered in recent weeks by the Italian makes one speculate a not one-sided match.
