Tennis, in the U.S. Masters 1000 debuts Lorenzo Musetti, fresh off winning the bronze medal at the Paris Olympics.
There is also Italian Lorenzo Musetti in the large troop of Italian tennis players who will try to make their way into the Cincinnati Masters 1000, the second round of the North American swing on cement. The Carrarino comes to the States with a good load of positive feelings after the historic bronze medal won in Paris in the Olympics that just ended.
In fact, Musetti’s season took off immediately after Roland Garros: the class of ’02 made the final at Queen’s, reached his first semifinal in a Slam at Wimbledon, and the Olympic medal – he finished on the podium along with two sacred monsters like Djokovic and Alcaraz – was the icing on the cake in a sensational month and a half in which the Tuscan tennis player re-entered the top 20. In Cincinnati Musetti will make his debut with Chilean Nicolas Jarry, who has been in sharp decline for about two months. Suffice it to say that the South American has not won a singles match since the Internazionali d’Italia and since May his only victories have come in doubles. Musetti thus starts favored unlike his compatriot Luciano Darderi. The oriundo is not having a great time – three losses in a row between Umag, Paris, and Montreal – and is likely to struggle mightily against Chilean Alejandro Tabilo.
There are two star-studded derbies
U.S. Marcos Giron disappointed in Montreal, losing in the first round to Australia’s Duckworth, but against Argentina’s Sebastian Baez he should make his greater adaptability on the fast court count. Balanced match also between Chinese Zhang and French talent Mpetshi Perricard, who, however, has very little experience on these courts.
Ben Shelton will try to forget the defeat he suffered in Canada against Popyrin in the derby with big server Opelka, who has just returned after a very long injury layoff. The other “fratricidal” clash that promises sparks is the one between Taylor Fritz and Brandon Nakashima: for the world number twelve it may not be a walk in the park. Two other matches that could end in the third set are Davidovich Fokina-Tiafoe and Thompson-Kecmanovic.
