Tennis, the Italian dreams of an encore in Gstaad but will have to watch out for the wild Halys. In Bastad, on the other hand, a newfound Nadal will take on Portugal’s Borges.
Gstaad confirms itself as a special place for Matteo Berrettini. In the Swiss town, the Roman “hammer” triumphed in 2018, came close to an encore in 2022 – the final lost in 3 sets to Casper Ruud – and now he has the chance to finish once again on the top step of the podium, winning what would be the ninth trophy in his career in the Atp circuit, the second in the season after Marrakech.
Berrettini on Swiss soil has not left a single set on the road and being able to take away his serve is equivalent to a feat. World No. 12 Stefanos Tsitsipas, in the semifinals continuously forced to chase, knows something about that. The Greek, who in the previous six had always gotten the better of the Italian, surrendered 7-6 7-5 to a very solid Berrettini, deluxe format to be clear, who almost never allowed him to enter the exchange. In the final he will start favored against the surprising Quentin Halys, who started from the qualifiers. For the first time the Frenchman-currently number 192 in the world-will play an Atp final: that he was going through a good period of form was already clear a few weeks ago at Wimbledon, when he made it to the third round and raised the white flag only in the fifth set against former top 10 Rune.
In Switzerland, Halys has strung together six wins in a row and in the semifinals overturned the odds against German Jan-Lennard Struff. He is also serving very well and that is why we are assuming at least one tie break. If Berrettini does not let his guard down he should be able to bring home the title, which will earn him a return to the top 50 of the Atp ranking.
Nadal in final 777 days later
He could also relish the sweet taste of victory again for 22-time Slam champion Rafa Nadal, who after 777 days will return to play the final of an Atp tournament (the last had been at Roland Garros 2022).
The indomitable Majorcan at 38 is trying to regain his level ahead of the Paris Olympics, and so far in Bastad he has gone through ups and downs. After two-set wins against Borg and Norrie, Nadal has struggled against both Argentine Navone and qualifier Ajdukovic, both of whom were able to snatch a set from him. Portugal’s Nuno Borges, who compared to the Spaniard has had a much more straightforward path, could also succeed. Nadal is obviously favored but another long match looms.
The finals are also being played in the Atp 500 tournament in Hamburg, with world No. 4 Alexander Zverev called upon to defend his title in his hometown against 2004 class Arthur Fils. The young Frenchman is playing well and will most likely prove to be a tough nut to crack for the German, in another challenge that could be decided in the third, as indeed was the case on the grass in Halle a month ago.
