Tennis, Nadal and Berrettini return to court: news and predictions Tuesday, July 16

Tennis, the Majorcan champion starts again in Sweden to prepare for the Paris Olympics. Gstaad also sees the Roman hammer again: predictions.

Rafa Nadal has chosen to restart from the Atp 250 tournament in Bastad to prepare for the upcoming Paris Olympics. The Majorcan champion has hinted that the Paris games could be one of his last appearances, besides, of course, the Laver Cup in September. The 14-time Roland Garros winner has not played since last May 27, when Alexander Zverev immediately ousted him from “his” Slam, dismissing him in three sets.

Curious and fascinating pairing in the first round of the Scandinavian tournament: facing Nadal will be Leo Borg, son of tennis legend Bjorn. The Spaniard’s victory is not in question and, despite the long layoff, the gap with the Swede remains very wide. The Majorcan should impose himself in two sets.

This week marks the return to clay after the grass-court interlude, and Italy’s Matteo Berrettini is hunting for points to climb back up the rankings in Gstaad, Switzerland. For the Roman hammer, fresh from his battle with compatriot Sinner at Wimbledon, there is immediately a clay-court doc as the Argentine Pedro Cachin, never faced before. Not a comfortable debut, but the Italian, who appeared in good form at the Championships, should advance to the second round without much trouble. In the Hamburg Atp 500, however, a thrilling tricolor derby between Luciano Darderi and Lorenzo Sonego will be staged, for the first time against each other. The Italo-Argentine at the moment seems to be in better shape than the Turin player-he also received a call-up for the upcoming Davis Cup commitments-and is slightly favored in a match of at least 23 games overall.

Rune, watch out for Marozsan

The 34-year-old Dusan Lajovic’s experience on this surface will likely be decisive in his match with Brazilian Meligeni Alves, but it promises to be a close match between the two in Hamburg.

Moving back to Bastad, Roberto Carballes Baena on clay can subvert the odds in a challenge with Roman Safiullin, who is decidedly more dangerous on fast. Balanced clash also between Argentina’s Thiago Tirante and Portugal’s Jaime Faria, while Switzerland’s Dominic Stricker can surprise Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp, who has restarted from the Challenger circuit after complicated months. Finally, Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan could prove to be a tough customer for Denmark’s Holger Rune, number 17 in the world.
