Tennis, Musetti dreams of final and medal: Olympic semifinal predictions

by Martin

Tennis, appointment with history for the Italian: between him and the Olympic final is Nole Djokovic again. In the other semifinal Alcaraz vs. Aliassime.

Just as in the last edition of Wimbledon, between the final and Lorenzo Musetti there is still him, the “old” Nole Djokovic, who at 37 wants to prove he is still the best and win that Olympic medal that continues to be missing in his immense palmares. To get to play the last act, however, the Serb will have to contend with the Carrara man.In the last six weeks, the Italian has recorded 16 wins and three losses, going through a true state of grace.

After his third win in a row over American Fritz in the round of 16, Musetti yesterday also won over German Zverev, the reigning Olympic champion and world No. 4. But more than anything else they were amazed by the manner in which he dismissed the Hamburg native (7-5 7-5), never able to counter his varied tennis. Djokovic, on the other hand, was graced in the second set by a Stefanos Tsitsipas who wasted several chances to win at least a partial. He too, like Musetti, has not lost a single set so far, despite the fact that at the end of the match with the Greek he complained of severe pain in his newly operated knee. However, Nole has “warned” everyone by saying that he will take the court even against medical advice.

A few weeks ago on grass he managed to tame a very good Musetti in 3 sets, but last June at Roland Garros – on the same courts where the Olympics is staged – he took a huge risk, winning only in the fifth.

Enough, in short, to give confidence to the Italian – the first Italian to play an Olympic semifinal since 1988 – who is playing very well and who can really dream of a feat of gigantic scope.

The outsider Aliassime for Alcaraz

In the other semifinal, the heavily favored Carlos Alcaraz and outsider Felix Auger-Aliassime will compete. The surprise Canadian made it all the way to the penultimate act of the tournament after overcoming two obstacles like Daniil Medvedev and Casper Ruud. A nice revenge after dark months due to injuries, in which he even missed the top 10. And in Paris he will have the opportunity to win at least one medal.

He seems to have little chance, however, against an Alcaraz who despite the ups and downs knows how to engage the right gear in the decisive moments of the match. In the quarterfinal against Tommy Paul the Spaniard risked going to the third, but in the tie break he gave – as usual – his best, sending the American home. Two sets will likely be enough for him to settle even Aliassime, beaten 3-0 in the last Roland Garros.
