Tennis, the Italian just won the title in Gstaad and will try to repeat in Kitzbuhel. In Umag, however, it’s Darderi and Fognini’s turn.
Matteo Berrettini does not stop and after his triumph in Gstaad, thanks to which he was able to put in his second title of the season (the ninth in his career), he goes in the hunt for more valuable Atp ranking points in the tournament in Kitzbuhel, Austria.
In the Swiss venue, the Roman was virtually perfect, not conceding a single set and almost always holding serve. Not even the top 20 Auger-Aliassime and Tsitsipas, whom he met in the quarters and semifinals, respectively, managed to scratch him. A success that earned him a return to the top 50: the goal, as Berrettini himself reiterated, is to make sure he is seeded at the next Australian Open. In the Gstaad final, the Italian crashed Frenchman Halys, leaving him with only 4 games, and he did not seem at all physically tested after a very intense week.
In Austria he will play on an even faster surface-it is still clay, however-an aspect that can further enhance his powerful serve. In the first round, however, he will have to deal with a tricky opponent, Russian Pavel Kotov, with whom there is no history. The Muscovite shoots some very powerful groundstrokes; Berrettini will have to try to keep him moving as much as possible, as he is not really a sprinter.
Considering that the Italian is coming from the exertions of Gstaad, it is fair to imagine that the total games, in the end, will be more than 19. Staying in Austria, the Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena, a surface specialist, may surprise the Hungarian Marton Fucsovics, who has not won a match since last May. Finally, Argentina’s Tirante will likely give a disappointment to host Dominic Thiem, who appeared to be struggling in Gstaad and is now close to retirement (2024 will be his last year on the circuit).
Darderi and Fognini on stage in Croatia
In Croatia, in Umag, two Italians will make their debuts: Luciano Darderi, who will play against Croatian Ajdukovic, and Fabio Fognini, who will take on young Frenchman Van Assche.
Both have a good chance of making it through the first round. Darderi in Hamburg last week surrendered to Baez in 3 sets: in front of him he will have a tennis player who surprisingly reached the semifinals in Bastad, Sweden, a tournament from which he was eliminated by Rafa Nadal. Ajdukovic, in short, deserves the utmost respect. The veteran from Arna di Taggia, on the other hand, will try to metabolize his defeat to Tsitsipas in Gstaad against the transalpine tennis player, already beaten in three sets at Wimbledon three weeks ago. In Kitzbuhel they will face Galan and Medjedovic again, two who just clashed in the qualifiers: the Colombian won after 3 partials and the Serb, repechaged as a lucky loser, dreams of a rematch. Hugo Gaston made world No. 4 Alexander Zverev suffer in Hamburg and will also give Daniel Altmaier a hard time, while top 10 Andrey Rublev, who has appeared very nervous in recent outings, might concede something to Argentine Ugo Carabelli.
