Tennis, back to Sinner and Berrettini: predictions Wednesday, Aug. 14

by Martin

Tennis, the Roman entered the main draw thanks to a wild card and challenges Denmark’s Rune. The world number one South Tyrolean is also on the court.

After winning two tournaments in a row and recovering several positions in the rankings — he is now 42nd in the world rankings — Matteo Berrettini is ready to make his debut in the Cincinnati Masters 1000. The Italian took advantage of a wild card to enter directly into the main draw bypassing qualifying and in the first round he will face young Danish tennis player Holger Rune, the number 15 seed.

The Scandinavian’s 2024 so far cannot be described as at all exciting: Rune has disappointed in the Slams, has not won a single tournament, and does not seem to have made any progress since last season, when he seemed destined to break into the top 5 on a permanent basis. In Montreal a week ago, he surrendered in the third round to Germany’s Alexander Zverev, and now he will have to deal with a Berrettini who on the clay of Gstaad and Kitzbuhel has shown great things. The Roman hammer’s last defeat came at Wimbledon, when he made Jannik Sinner sweat the fatal seven shirts. For bookmakers, he is slightly favored and can be trusted in a match that could end in the third set (at least one tie break is expected).

Night Musetti takes on Tiafoe

At about the same time Jannik Sinner will also take the court. The world number one is coming off a flop in Montreal, where he failed to defend the title he won in 2023, losing several ranking points.

Against Russia’s Rublev, the South Tyrolean revealed the usual physical problems – hip pain – although in the post-match interview he reiterated that the goal is to be at the top at the US Open. In Cincinnati Sinner will debut with American Alex Michelsen, who came from the qualifiers and was able to overturn the odds against Dutchman Griekspoor in the first round. The San Candido native should dispatch in 2 sets but it would not be a surprise if it did not go smoothly. On the night it will be Lorenzo Musetti’s turn, fresh off a comeback success over Chilean Jarry. U.S. Frances Tiafoe is always unpredictable and on the fast court he gives his best but the Italian is in a great moment: a hard-fought match is looming. As for the other challenges scheduled today, Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime should have no problem against qualifier Aleksandar Kovacevic and the same goes for Czech Tomas Machac, favored over Australian Max Purcell.

Two possible surprises? The experienced Gael Monfils could trip the Australian Popyrin, who against all odds won the Montreal Masters 1000 (repeating is always difficult), while Stefanos Tsitsipas, after his furious quarrel with his father-coach, risks something against the fearsome German Struff.
