Switzerland-Italy: predictions scorers, shots, cautions

by Martin

Switzerland-Italy, again Yakin’s Swiss on the Azzurri’s way. A pass to the quarterfinals is up for grabs in Berlin.

Italy managed to grab the round of 16 by the hair when all seemed lost. In minute 97 of the match against Croatia, a wonderful “tiraggiro” by Zaccagni allowed the Italian national team to retake Modric and his teammates, prevent them from being overtaken in the standings, and end the group stage in second place, behind unreachable Spain.

In hindsight, the Lazio striker’s goal was of vital importance, because in case of defeat the selection led by Luciano Spalletti would not have finished even among the best thirds. Instead, four points were enough to detach one of the 16 passes to the knockout stage: the scoreboard also seems to smile on the Azzurri, since almost all the favorites for the final victory – with the exception of England – ended up on the opposite side. Before a hypothetical challenge with the English in the quarterfinals, however, the obstacle Switzerland will have to be overcome. An opponent who is anything but soft and has “risked” winning its group, even finishing ahead of hosts Germany. Last Sunday Murat Yakin’s men came within a whisker of beating the Germans but their dream was shattered in the dying minutes when they were pierced by a goal from Fullkrug, which set the score at1-1. Switzerland goes into the round of 16 undefeated: one win and two draws so far for the Swiss.

Switzerland-Italy, for the Azzurri the dangers are named Ndoye and Vargas

So far, the contribution in terms of goals by the Azzurri’s center forwards, Retegui and Scamacca, has been nil. The only goals have come from a defender, Bastoni, a midfielder, Barella, and an outside forward, Zaccagni.

It is difficult to predict the formation Spalletti will choose to face Switzerland, since the coach changed quite a lot against Croatia, returning, for example, to a three-man defense. It cannot be ruled out that he will decide to dispose in mirror, dusting off that 3-4-2-1 already tried in the past. At that point a token could be bet on the one of the two “underpins,” which is likely to be Chiesa and Zaccagni, whose odds are on the rise after the goal against Croatia. As for shots on goal, the usual Barella, often dangerous from distance, should be considered. But also watch out for Bastoni, who in the last match recorded three total shots. In Switzerland, the two most dangerous players for the Azzurri defense could be the two outfielders Ndoye and Vargas (at least two total shots), but Italy will also have to watch out for the stainless Shaqiri, a factor whenever he wears the national team’s jersey. Finally, should he play, Mancini is undoubtedly one of the main suspects to end up in the referee’s notebook.
