Straight away trouble for Sinner: there’s little to be cheerful about

by Mike

Sinner, Australia is a very dangerous place: we’re going to see some serious stuff.

An even split, which could not be more balanced than this. The first and last Slam of the season went to Jannik Sinner, the second and third to Carlos Alcaraz. If the Italian confirmed that he is the undisputed king of concrete, the Spaniard proved, no small feat, that he can also do very well on clay and grass.

And it matters little that the Iberian already has 4 majors under his belt, because the race for the legend has just begun and something tells us that the world number 1 will do everything to redress the balance and close the current gap. Australia will, in this sense, offer him a golden opportunity. The defending champion is, of course, the favorite to win the Slam to be played in January in the land of the kangaroos, yet it would be wrong, very wrong, to assume that he will triumph without any ifs or buts.

Of course, the chances of that happening are very high, especially if Sinner, as is hoped, continues to play as he did in 2024, a year in which he strung together 73 wins out of 79 matches played. There is an unknown, however, that he cannot take into account. Least of all at such a delicate time. For while it is true that he is desperate to get even with the Spaniard, it is equally true that Alcaraz, for his part, will also be moved by a desire to oust his high-court rival and shine again at the top of the Atp rankings.

Trema Sinner: how many pitfalls in Australia

Carlos seems moved by the best intentions, after all, on the eve of the first Slam of the year. So much so that, in an interview upon his arrival in the land of the kangaroos, he let slip statements that have a bit, pass the term, the flavor of “threat. ”

“I know that sooner or later I will win the Australian Open,” said the former world No. 1, “My year has been a year of ups and downs, but still positive, I still get excited when I watch the videos of Paris and London again. But I am a very ambitious person and I want to win the Australian Open to complete the Career Grand Slam (it is achieved when you win one edition of each of the 4 majors of the season, ed.). I want 2025 to be even more exciting, I want more. If I win, I will tattoo a kangaroo, even though my father doesn’t like it very much. Being champion there is my main goal for next season.”

Words, his, that need no interpretation. Carlos’s message to Jannik is clear and limpid, and all that remains is to see, at this point, how Sinner will react to the “affront” of his most bitter rival.
