So much news in the Berrettini universe: two new additions to Matteo’s team

by Michael

Berrettini, this is how the Roman tennis player will tackle the second chapter of his career: the composition of the team and the new figures hired.

We are just over two weeks away from the date we have circled in red on the calendar that will sanction, hopefully definitively, Matteo Berrettini’s return to the court. Who has not, contrary to expectations, decided to avail himself of protected ranking from the first moment.

He wisely determined, urged for sure by his new coach Francisco Roig, to start at the bottom before aiming for the stars. So much so that he will not be storming back into a Masters 1000, but will go to Phoenix to stretch his legs in a Challenger that will be a kind of litmus test for him. There he will be able to carbonize and play a bit to get used to the court and the maddening pace of tennis again, before he jumps back into the lion’s den and faces the big boys on the circuit. It will be in Miami, then, that he will take advantage of the benefits of the so-called protected ranking for the first time.

For 9 tournaments, to be played in 9 months at the most, he will be able to avail himself of a virtual ranking position (derived from an average of the placings prior to the injury suffered at the Us Open) and possibly avoid playing the qualifiers. This is not, however, the only novelty in the Berrettini universe. On the fire, already in the pot, are many others.

Berrettini, who are the two new signings

Naturally, fans are looking forward, in addition to seeing him back on the court, to see if and to what extent the work with the new coach, Francisco Roig, has affected his style of play. He has changed head coaches, after parting ways with Vincenzo Santopadre, but his team has undergone further changes.

On the team will still be Umberto Rianna, an inseparable reference point for Matthew, but there will also be another physiotherapist, whose name is Daniel Pohl. Also confirmed are the two physical trainers, namely Francesco Bientinesi and Roberto Squadrone, as well as the agents and members of the press office.

There is one last new entry in Berrettini’s team, nothing that will surprise too many who follow him on social networks. Many will have already noticed the presence, in Monte Carlo, of Alessandro Bega, Matteo’s great friend and Wta coach. Until a few months ago, he worked precisely with Matteo’s ex-girlfriend, Ajla Tomljanovic, but it is not clear whether the two had broken off their collaboration earlier or whether, instead, Bega dumped the Croatian tennis player to “embrace” Berrettini. The fact remains that his presence on the team, not only from a technical point of view but also in light of the relationship between them, could be as crucial as the experience Roig will have put at the service of the Roman.
