Slovenia-Denmark, Euro 2024: live TV, streaming, likely lineups, predictions

by Lea

Slovenia-Denmark is a match on the first day of the group stage of Euro 2024 and is played Sunday at 6 p.m.: statistics, likely lineups, predictions, TV and streaming.

In a twist of fate, Slovenia and Denmark find themselves against each other after playing each other in the Euro 2024 qualifying round. What is most striking when looking at the final standings of the grouping is that both finished on 22 points. But while for the Danes – semifinalists in the last European Championship – winning the group was almost a must given the level of their opponents, the same cannot be said of the Slovenians, who have not qualified for the final stage of the continent’s top event in 24 years.

Seven wins, one draw and two losses was the tally for Matjaz Kek’s selection, which boarded the plane to Germany at the expense of top-ranked Finland, beaten 3-0 in the decisive clash last October. In that match, the star of Benjamin Sesko, who scored a brace (5 total goals in the qualifiers), shone. The young Leipzig striker is undoubtedly the most talented player in a national team that seemingly seems doomed in a group that also includes England, Serbia and Denmark.

Denmark dreams of another ride

In addition to him, Kek is also betting a lot on Bijol and Lovric, who play in Italy with Udinese, on the experienced goalkeeper Oblak, a guarantee, and finally on the plays of former Atalanta player Ilicic, summoned as a surprise after an excellent season in his homeland with Maribor.

Denmark, on the other hand, has changed little from three years ago – Kasper Hjulmand still sits on the bench – with Eriksen always the centerpiece of the game. We are talking about a very physical team moved by the ambition to try to dominate possession. The Scandinavians, however, would need more quality, the kind that was lacking in the last World Cup, to have any chance of making it to the bottom. The Qatar expedition turned out to be a real flop, with Denmark finishing last in the group preceded even by Australia and Tunisia. Hjulmand’s men in Germany are likely to duel with the Serbs for second place behind the English: in that sense, the two successes in friendlies with Sweden and Norway were a confidence boost.

The latest lineup news

Solidity is the watchword at home in Slovenia. Coach Kek will not deviate from a scholastic 4-4-2, in which the two forwards are Sporar and Sesko. Between the posts is Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Oblak, while the defense will consist of Karničnik, Brekalo, Bijol and Janža. Udinese midfielder Lovric is among the call-ups but is coming from an injury and is unlikely to start.

On the other side, Hjulmand is expected to opt for a three-man defense consisting of Andersen, Christensen and Vestergaard. On the flanks wide for Kristensen and Bah, Eriksen in the direction “protected” by Hojbjerg and former Lecce man Hjulmand (only the selector’s namesake). In attack, Denmark relies mainly on the “hunger” for goals of Manchester United center forward Hojlund, back from a season in which he somewhat disappointed expectations.

The prediction

A draw and a win by Denmark in the qualifiers (1-1 and 2-1). We would not be surprised, therefore, if we witness a more balanced match than expected this time as well, with the Danes favored but unlikely to be able to keep their goal inviolate. Slovenia, in short, will be able to assert itself in a match of at least one goal on each side.
