Sinner, now it gets bad: overtaking it is

by Lea

Overtaking was in the air, but no one expected it to happen so quickly. Everything has changed, now it’s going to be so hard.

This time last year, there was already talk of a record. No one could have imagined, however, that in 2024 it would be even worse than in 2023. And those who believed it was impossible to offer even more were wrong, because the “denial” came even sooner than we thought.

It may seem surreal to you, but the prize money up for grabs at the 2024 Us Open will be higher than the prize money that was set for last year’s edition. And so, once again, the star-studded one has become the richest Slam in the history of the majors. The increase, compared to 365 days ago, is very substantial. We are talking about $10 million more, considering that it went from $65 million to $75, the equivalent, to put it mildly, of about 68.3 million.

The overtaking, then, was served. If Wimbledon had played it up, putting on the plate the sterling equivalent of about 58.9 million euros, the New Yorkers have well thought of doing even more and taking back the status of the most generous Major ever. It’s looking bad, then, for the other Slams, grappling with a record that will be hard to beat from here on out and to which no one is likely to come close. Not in the immediate term, at least. But let’s find out, now, how much the tennis players competing at Flushing Meadows will earn.

Us Open in history: richest Slam of all time

Let’s start by saying that no one pays off like the Us Open, both in the case of winning and in the case of stopping in the early rounds instead. Just getting access to the main draw and playing the first round will pay more than winning an Atp 250 category: $100,000, or just over 91,000 euros.

Access to the second round is worth $140,000, while tennis players who reach the round of 16 will collect $215,000. $325,000 is earmarked for the champions who hit the round of 16 at the Us Open, and $530,000 will go to the eight who nab the quarterfinals.

The prize money up for grabs for the semifinalists amounts to $1 million, and all that remains is to find out, at this point, how large the checks the tournament will write for the losing finalist and the new champion, who for bookmakers will probably be Carlos Alcaraz, in the odds slightly ahead of Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic. The runner-up will win $1 million 800 thousand, while whoever lifts the trophy will bank a super prize of $3 million 600 thousand.
