Italian tennis is experiencing a truly unprecedented moment. And tonight Jannik Sinner, the world number one, could hoist the tricolor over Flushing Meadows for the first time in history, at least as far as the men’s tournament is concerned (in the women’s, a fantastic Flavia Pennetta triumphed in the Big Apple in 2015).

For the rest, it has been a very solid Sinner the one admired in Flushing Meadows so far, able to untangle such insisitive obstacles as Russia’s Medvedev, folded in four sets, and especially the excellent Draper, who in the semifinals, although surrendering in 3 sets, forced the Italian to stay on the court for more than three hours (7-5 7-6 6-2). Fritz also passed important tests, especially the one against one of the favorites for the final victory, Alexander Zverev, who was eliminated in the quarters. It took five partials, then, to get the better of Tiafoe in the Stars and Stripes derby. Fritz has challenged Sinner twice before and the balance is one win on each side. The curious fact is that the two have played each other exclusively on the outdoor concrete of Indian Wells: in 2021 the U.S. won, but two years later Sinner took revenge, overcoming the San Diego native in three sets.

The Prediction
Sinner is superior to Fritz in almost all fundamentals, except the serve, which is the American’s strong suit. The Italian is obviously heavily favored, but the American, the author of an excellent run, cannot be underestimated. And having the crowd on his side will be important. It would not be a surprise, therefore, if Sinner concedes at least one set. It is very likely that it will come down to playing at least one tie break.
