Sinner-Draper, US Open: schedule, live free-to-air TV, streaming, prediction

by Mark

Sinner-Draper is a valid match for the US Open semifinals: analysis, statistics, news, schedule, prediction, live TV and streaming.

Who knows if a month ago, when they played doubles together in the Montreal Masters 1000, they had assumed such a scenario. The fact is that just under 30 days later, Jannik Sinner and Jack Draper find themselves against each other in the U.S. Open semifinals, ready to vie for a pass to Sunday’s grand final. The Briton, who in a Slam had never come this far, is the final obstacle between the South Tyrolean and his second final in a Major after playing (and winning) last January in Australia.

The world number one is back from yet another show of strength: in the quarters he knocked off Russia’s Medvedev, who had given him a setback in July by eliminating him from Wimbledon. This time Sinner remained extremely focused in the crucial moments of the match, and while he continued to be ineffective on serve, he proved that on the fast court no one can counter his solidity from the baseline. It took only four sets (6-2 1-6 6-1 6-4) to fold the Muscovite and win the only semifinal he had never played: he is the first tennis player born after the 1980s to reach the top four in all Slams, as well as the third Italian after Barazzutti and Berrettini to reach the semi-finals in New York. He is now heavily favored but he must not make the mistake of lowering his focus.

A single comparison between the two

Draper, in fact, has been sensational so far, not leaving a single set on the road. Taking advantage of the “gaps” in the scoreboard, the Englishman has worked his way through potential pitfalls like a veteran of the circuit and in the quarters trimmed a clear 3-0 win over the more experienced de Minaur. Starting next Monday, he will enter the top 20 of the Atp rankings for the first time.

This will be only the second head-to-head between Sinner and Draper, who are also great friends off the court. And, surprisingly, it is the Briton who has the advantage: in 2021 he prevailed on the grass at Queen’s in two sets.

The Prediction

Draper has shown no weaknesses so far, proving that he has grown so much, but it is also true that he has not faced opponents of Sinner’s caliber. It won’t be a walk in the park for the South Tyrolean, but the Briton seems to have very little chance against his powerful groundstrokes: the Italian should come out on top in a match of less than 39 games overall.
