Sinner drama, ranking changes: loses first place

by Mike

Sinner, in no time the ranking has been shaken up: the Italian loses the first place, this was not needed.

It seems like just yesterday that Jannik Sinner was playing in the Finals as Matteo Berrettini’s backup. And it is, indeed. It has not been that long since his debut at the Pala Alpitour, although much, much water has passed under the bridge. So much so that the Blue was, last year, one step away from winning the Masters tournament.

He failed to do so, but in November, after all, he had not yet won a single Slam. This year he can try again and, opponents permitting, this time he might actually do it. It’s just too bad that in the past few hours events have taken an unexpected turn. It’s just too bad that, in the midst of his most brilliant season yet, someone is coming to break his eggs in the basket.

Sinner is first, as he is known, in the Atp rankings, but not only that. In addition to dominating the world rankings he also towers at the top of the Race, the ranking on the basis of which it is determined who deserves to participate in the Finals. This ranking takes into account only the results of the current season, and it goes without saying that, so far, there has been none for anyone. Jannik leads with 6,000 points and has a large margin over his pursuers. Except for one.

Sinner, German threat on the horizon: the risk is real

Before we figure out who is “threatening” his second and very important record, let’s see how the South Tyrolean’s haul is composed. Sinner put 2,000 points in his pocket from a Race perspective by winning the Australian Slam; another 500 came in Rotterdam, 400 for a semifinal in Indian Wells, 1,000 for a win in Miami, 400 for a semifinal in Monte Carlo.

He won another 200 by reaching the quarters in Madrid, 800 by reaching the semifinals at Roland Garros, 500 by winning in Halle, and 200 by hitting the quarters at Wimbledon. At the end of the British Slam he may still be in text, but there is someone who could concretely overtake him. Should Alexander Zverev win the Championships, his haul, now 4,000 685 points, would rise to 6,000 685.

There is no one other than him who can achieve this. All that remains to be seen at this point is whether it will actually happen or whether, instead, Jannik will be able to protect his haul and the prospect of hitting the Atp Finals as the frontrunner.
