Berrettini, that’s the only record his colleague Sinner hasn’t broken yet: he hasn’t succeeded this time either.
Tickets for the Internazionali d’Italia are going fast. Same goes for those for the 2024 Finals, which will once again be played in Turin. Thanks to Jannik Sinner, of course, his appeal and talent. Stuff that everyone dreams of being able to see him play live, that when does it happen again to have such a prestigious tournament on your doorstep?
There is no doubt, in short, that the tennis player from San Candido now influences tennis and all the variables that revolve around it. And this is proven, in case there was need for further evidence to support this thesis, by the ratings data of the last match he played. The Italian, we recall, won his second Masters 1000 final on Sunday night. That earned him not only a whole bunch of very useful points in terms of ranking, but also allowed him to climb to second place in the world rankings. We thought it would take the summer for this to happen, but Jannik was ahead of schedule and accomplished another mission well ahead of schedule.
But back to the data. The Miami final broke a not insignificant record: it is the final of a Masters 1000 to have had the highest ratings on Sky. The match, which began at 9:18 p.m. on Easter evening, was watched by 1 million 511 thousand average viewers. The figure for unique viewers, on the other hand, stood at 2 million 600 thousand, with an 8.3 percent share. At the time of match point, there were 1 million 800 thousand average viewers in front of the screen. Nevertheless, Sinner did not break the other record that was on the line.
Berrettini doesn’t beat himself (yet): Sinner is not enough
The Miami final did not match, in terms of viewership, a certain match that was played in 2021, on the impeccably manicured green lawns of the All England Club.
At the Wimbledon final, as you may remember, Matteo Berrettini and Novak Djokovic faced each other, a match that still holds the title of best match of all time on Sky. On that occasion there were 1 million 523 thousand average viewers, or 11 percent share, and 3.5 million unique viewers. The post-match and pre-match also did very well, which, like the match itself, reached eye-popping numbers.
That was, arguably, a watershed moment for Italian tennis. The first act of a new era that continued, then, with the exploit of Jannik Sinner. The beginning of a dream.
