Jannik Sinner, the spotlight on the affair related to his Clostebol positivity has not yet turned off: he had other things to say.
No one better than an athlete can understand how Jannik Sinner may have felt the moment the world came crashing down on him. How he felt when he found out he tested positive for Clostebol and realized that nothing would ever be the same from that moment on.
Some defended him and never doubted his lack of facts, some did not. But that is another story. Sofia Goggia, for her part, never doubted the innocence of the South Tyrolean champion, who in Shanghai was mathematically certain to remain at the top of the world ranking until the end of the year. Indeed, in an interview granted to Tuttosport, the Italian alpine skier launched into an extremely interesting examination of the Clostebol affair.
First, dusting through her personal archives, she drew parallels between an affair from her past and Sinner’s present. “A very young Sofia Goggia in Lake Louise in 2013 did not race,” the champion recalled, ”because she had a chilblain with a cut on her big toe and the doctor had given her trophodermine, the same ointment as in Jannik’s case. When he realized it was on the list of banned substances, he stopped me. Of course, if this is how Sinner’s case went, that of the physical therapist is a serious mistake. Then this thing makes you think.”
Sinner and Clostebol, Goggia is certain: “It’s a serious mistake. ‘
In absolving Jannik of any responsibility she may have had in this affair, she went on to explain how much these ’accidents” scare athletes, including her, of course.
“Just last night at dinner we were talking about this with the girls on the team: we do daily massages with the same physios, not to mention we leave our backpack at the end of the track with our water bottles and go back up to the gate. If someone comes by and puts something in you and you drink and then turn out to be doped?” added Goggia, who also spoke in the interview about the mental and emotional consequences of the latest injury she suffered.
Sofia, too, therefore, is on Sinner’s side. Which is by no means a given, having seen in recent weeks how many other athletes have lashed out at the world No. 1, questioning his integrity and sincerity.
