Sinner-Berrettini, Wimbledon: schedule, live TV, streaming, predictions

by Mike

Sinner-Berrettini is a valid match for the second round of Wimbledon: analysis, statistics, news, schedule, predictions, live TV and streaming.

Fate – mocking – wanted Jannik Sinner and Matteo Berrettini, the two most anticipated Italians at Wimbledon, to clash already in the second round of the London Slam. For Italian tennis, this is negative news – one of the two will leave the green courts of the English capital practically immediately – but at the same time positive, as Berrettini himself pointed out in an interview, speaking of great pride for the whole movement.

The odds are obviously unbalanced for the world number one, who starts clearly favored over the Roman. We should not forget, however, Berrettini’s special relationship with this surface: no Italian has won more than him on grass – Sinner’s first title on the grass took him home a week ago in Halle, Germany – and most importantly, he made it to the finals at Wimbledon itself, surrendering only to Djokovic in 2021.

Number one Jannik vs. herbivore Matteo

In these three years, unfortunately, injuries have gotten in the way, and as a result, the gap between Berrettini and Sinner has widened further.

The Roman tennis player in the last two years has played few matches, finished outside the top 100 (today he is 59th) and is struggling to return to the levels of the beginning of the decade, physical problems permitting. In contrast, the South Tyrolean, five years younger, has definitely taken off, becoming-as was quite predictable-one of the best in the world. Since last January, in fact, his trophy case also features a Slam trophy, the Australian Open, the first Italian to do so since Panatta. Sinner began his London adventure with a four-set success against Germany’s Hanfmann (6-3 6-4 3-6 6-3), conceding something only in the third set. A script very similar to the one we witnessed in the match between Fucsovic and Berrettini, who was good in repelling the comeback attempts of the Magyar, liquidated in 4 sets (7-6 6-2 3-6 6-1).

The Prediction

Sinner is a real “cannibal” when he plays a derby: thirteen wins out of thirteen each time he has met an Italian on his way. Berrettini himself, in their only head-to-head – staged last August in Toronto – surrendered in two sets (6-4 6-3). Grass is undoubtedly the natural habitat of the Roman, who relies on his powerful serve, but the feeling is that against this Sinner – also considering the 2021 finalist’s precarious physical shape – there is little he can do. We believe Berrettini, however, can win at least one set. It is also likely to come down to at least a tie break.
