Roland Garros, women’s draw: news and predictions Tuesday, June 4

by Mike

Roland Garros, quarterfinals also begin in women’s singles: who will stop defending champion Swiatek?

There are eight left in the women’s singles draw as well: the quarterfinals can begin. All five top seeds are present, from Iga Swiatek to Marketa Vondrousova, via Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff and Elena Rybakina. This time the strongest did not betray expectations, in short.

Who seems animated by “bad intentions” is certainly the US tennis player, current number three in the world. Gauff has so far walked on velvet, leaving only a few games to her opponents on the court. Her latest “victim” was our Elisabetta Cocciaretto, swept away in just an hour in the match valid for the round of 16. Also engaged in the doubles with Siniakova, the 20-year-old from Atlanta to get to play her second final in Paris after the one in 2022 must contend with Tunisian Ons Jabeur, whom she is preparing to face for the seventh time in her career. The world number 9 in the French capital has regained her confidence and in the last two rounds has ruled in two sets two tricky tennis players such as Fernandez and Tauson. Against the surprising Dane, however, she ended up committing too many unforced errors and for sure Gauff, with monstrous percentages on serve (80%), will not be as forgiving as the Scandinavian player has been. Leading 4-2 in the previous games, the American should impose herself again this time and as in 2021 she will manage in two partials.

The Polish is scary

The question, however, is another: who will stop Swiatek? Here in Paris, the world number one seems to have no weak points. And the third Roland Garros in a row (fourth in total) is getting closer and closer.

In the round of 16 in just 40 minutes of play she annihilated Russia’s Potapova, to whom she handed a heavy double bagel (6-0 6-0), demonstrating embarrassing superiority. The only one who has given her a hard time so far was Japan’s Osaka in the second round, winning the second set. In the quarters is Czech Marketa Vondrousova, who has lost four out of four to the Warsaw native. The defending Wimbledon champion is doing her best but there is little she can do against this Swiatek.
