Roland Garros, Italy’s Cocciaretto for the first time in an eighth final of the Parisian Slam: for her is world number three Gauff.
Among the tennis players remaining in the competition until the second week of Roland Garros is Elisabetta Cocciaretto, who has never before gone this far in a Grand Slam tournament. The Marche player had a fantastic seven days: in the opener she overturned the odds against top seed Haddad Maia and then, in the next two rounds, she won in two sets first against Spain’s Bucsa and then against Russia’s Samsonova, thus breaking away with a pass to the round of 16 (as of next Monday, she will surely be among the world’s top 50 again).
The obstacle she now faces, however, is an insurmountable one. We are talking about the world number 3 Coco Gauff, among the main favorites for the final victory along with Swiatek and Sabalenka. The American has not encountered major difficulties so far, eliminating Avdeeva, Zidansek and Yastremska without any problems. In her two previous matches on the main circuit against Cocciaretto she always got away in two sets, even though they have never met on the red circuit. We believe that Gauff will manage to settle our tennis player in two partials this time as well, but one of them could be particularly hard-fought. The other big surprise of this Roland Garros bears the name of Olga Danilovic, who from the qualifiers ended up in the top 16, taking important scalps such as those of Collins and Vekic. The Serb will surely also create some headaches for Marketa Vondrousova, the defending Wimbledon champion, but the Czech’s greater experience will eventually make the difference.
Jabeur vs. the surprising Tauson
Three-time Roland Garros champion and world number one Iga Swiatek in her first three outings suffered only against Japan’s Osaka, who forced her into the third set.
Then there were no hiccups against Jeajean and Bouzkova, and not even Russia’s Anastasia Potapova, despite being particularly brilliant on this surface, will be able to give her a hard time. Instead, a hard-fought and uncertain match looms between the surprising Clara Tauson and Tunisian Ons Jabeur. The North African offered perhaps her best performance of 2024 against Fernandez in the third round but one cannot underestimate what the Dane managed to “combine,” eliminating two highly experienced tennis players such as Ostapenko and Kenin by playing great tennis. We say Jabeur but it will be a far from “short” match.
