Jasmine Paolini, the only Italian player still competing, is one step away from what would be her first quarterfinal at a Slam. The fantastic moment continues for the Lucchese tennis player who, after steadily entering the top 20 in the world – she is currently 15th – now dreams of another record.
So far the Italian has fared well: last Saturday she held her own against Slam champion Bianca Andreescu, folded in three sets (6-1 3-6 6-0). Prior to her challenge with the Canadian, she had gotten the better of Australian Saville and US Baptiste, two fairly straightforward wins showing how much Renzo Furlan’s student has grown in recent months. Paolini will also start favored against Russian Elina Avanesyan, who in the previous round surprisingly beat Chinese Zheng, number 8 in the world. This is the first head-to-head match between the two tennis players: if the Italian can maintain this level she should win without any problems against an opponent within reach. A decidedly more uncertain match is the one between Elina Svitolina and Elena Rybakina, who find themselves against each other almost three years after their last precedent. At the Tokyo Olympics it was the Ukrainian, who also won the only match on the
