Premier League, predictions ninth day: matches Saturday 4 p.m.

Premier League, huge chance for Manchester City: Pep Guardiola’s men face a struggling Southampton team.

After a busy week in which the big stars were the European cups, the Premier League fixture returns. Eight days have already ended in the archives: at the top of the standings currently is Liverpool but defending champion Manchester City is not giving an inch, staying with their breath on the neck of Arne Slot’s Reds.

The Cityzens are second, just one point behind the leader, and this weekend they have a great chance: overtaking is possible, considering that Liverpool 24 hours later will face Arsenal in the day’s big match. Pep Guardiola’s men, on the other hand, have a commitment on paper quite affordable: they will face the newly promoted Southampton, penultimate in the standings and capable of winning only one point in eight league rounds. Another goleada in sight? Likely, since the Saints so far have not excelled defensively, conceding a whopping 18 goals. City, however, is struggling to keep its goal unbeaten this year: while in the Champions League this week came its third consecutive clean sheet – 5-0 at Sparta Prague – in the league the defense did not concede a goal only on the first day against Chelsea. Therefore, it cannot be ruled out that Southampton will manage to score at least one goal in a challenge that in any case promises to be one-sided.

The predictions for the other matches

Aston Villa are also healthy, with full points in the Champions League after their success with Bologna (2-0) in the week. Unai Emery’s team cashed in its last (and only) defeat last August and has a good chance to impose itself again against Bournemouth, fresh from its surprising victory over Arsenal (2-0). The Cherries, however, struggle away from home – only one success since the season began – and are unlikely to replicate the feat.

In front of their own public, Brentford, favored over Ipswich Town, always has a leg up: the Bees are fresh from the defeat to Manchester United (2-1) and have a chance to turn over a new leaf against a struggling opponent, which comes from two bad defeats in a row (West Ham, Everton) and has not yet won a single game. Victory within reach, finally, also for Brighton: Wolverhampton is unable in any way to pick themselves up (five consecutive defeats) and stop the defensive hemorrhage (23 goals conceded so far).
