Premier League, Liverpool and Arsenal make their debut against Ipswich Town and Wolverhampton, respectively: predictions.
There is great anticipation around the new Liverpool of Arne Slot, the former Feyenoord coach who took the place of a real institution like Jurgen Klopp, a coach capable of winning everything in nine unforgettable years. The Reds, however, have shined in the preseason – one draw and four victories, including those against Arsenal and Manchester United – and, while coming behind Manchester City and Arsenal in the odds to win the 2024-25 Premier League, they absolutely cannot be underestimated.
Liverpool’s debut will take place at the home of a newly promoted side, Ipswich Town, who are rejoining the top flight after a 22-year wait. The Tractor Boys will not be those of 40-50 years ago, when they were fighting for important goals, but they have made an ambitious buying campaign: bringing home salvation, however, will not be obvious, and against these Reds they are unlikely to avoid defeat in a match of at least 3 goals total. Debut is also far from prohibitive for Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal, which hosts Wolverhampton at the Emirates Stadium, an almost impregnable fort last year. The Gunners appear to have strengthened (Calafiori has arrived in defense) and will again attempt to dethrone Manchester City after coming close to the title two years in a row: again we expect a fairly wide success from the Londoners.
The predictions on the other matches
Everton has confirmed Sean Dyche, a coach who was able to bring the Toffees to safety despite penalty points (8), and at Goodison Park should at least avoid defeat against Brighton: the Seagulls, having archived the De Zerbi era, have entrusted themselves to a very young coach born in 1993 – the Swiss Fabian Hurzeler – who last season led St. Pauli to the Bundesliga. There will be no shortage of goals in the Liverpool challenge.
Newcastle wants to raise the bar compared to last season, which ended outside the European positions because of Manchester United – the Red Devils “leapfrogged” the Magpies by winning the FA Cup – and will have no big problems against newly promoted Southampton, back in the Premier after a year of purgatory. Equilibrium, on the other hand, between two teams that will most likely fight to keep their category like Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth, but the evening match between West Ham and Aston Villa, two clubs that want to fight for Europe, is also difficult to read: in both cases we assume at least one goal on each side.
