Premier League, predictions day 16: matches Saturday 4 p.m.

by Michael

Premier League, Liverpool and Arsenal on the pitch: the Reds host Fulham at Anfield Road while for the Gunners it’s Everton.

After the last round, the gap between the first (Liverpool) and second (Chelsea) in the Premier League standings has narrowed but only because the Reds’ match against Everton was postponed due to bad weather. In any case, the team led by Arne Slot, whose only defeat – which is also the only one of the season – dates back to last September, when they surprisingly surrendered to Nottingham Forest, remains firmly in the lead.

Salah and his teammates in the week, on the other hand, achieved yet another victory in the Champions League, remaining on full points. In the away match at Girona, a penalty converted by the Egyptian striker (0-1) was enough to bring home another success. No one in the cup with the big ears has managed to do better than Liverpool, which already has the pass to the round of 16 in its pocket. In the league, the Reds’ last appearance had been with Newcastle, which was able to impose a draw on the leaders (3-3). There is, in short, an urgency to get back to winning ways to avoid having more points nibbled off by direct competitors: Marco Silva’s Fulham, who just stopped Arsenal in a derby that was more hard-fought than expected, is on the scene at Anfield. The Cottagers gravitate to mid-table and have lost only to Wolverhampton since the end of October: they cannot, therefore, be underestimated more than that, although Liverpool start as clear favorites in a match of more than two total goals.

The predictions on the other matches

Arsenal, at the same time, has a duty to prevent Liverpool from escaping. The Gunners have slowed down after three consecutive wins by not going beyond a draw with Fulham and cannot afford to lose any more points on the road against Everton.

Mikel Arteta’s team has won in front of its home crowd 17 of its 29 points and getting the better of the Toffees, who have won only once in the last 6 days, should not be a problem, although the midweek commitment in the Champions League may have taken some energy away from the English capital’s lineup. Newcastle, which slipped to 12th place after a 4-2 defeat to Everton, is not faring well at all: the Magpies have scored 2 points in the last 4 days and will have to watch out for Leicester, undefeated since the new coach, Ruud van Nistelrooy, sits on the bench (win with West Ham and draw with Brighton). Match with at least one goal on each side, finally, as well, the one between Wolverhampton and Ipswich Town, a real salvation clash. Wolves have conceded a whopping 38 goals, but neither is the Tractor Boys’ defense airtight, as they have recorded only one clean sheet since the league began.
