The Montreal tennis tournament highlighted the great state of Italian tennis form. And not only as far as Jannik Sinner is concerned.
After the Olympic Games, tennis is now non-stop. It ended in these hours the Montreal Masters 1000 and immediately will begin in the next few hours the Cincinnati Masters 1000 with our number one Jannik Sinner called to react. In Canada the athlete from San Candido did not defend the title, hip problems reappeared and Jannik succumbed in the Quarterfinals against Russian Rublev.
A dull performance and a tennis player seen as ‘a distant relative’ to the one we admired months ago in Australia and in the many early season victories. The number one now has to defend himself, Carlos Alcaraz’s attack is imminent, and the next tournaments will be decisive in maintaining the world’s top scepter. If Sinner is going slow, Italian tennis continues to show all its talent and even in Canada we saw yet another seasonal exploit.
Matteo Arnaldi reached his best result in his career with the semifinal of a 1000, the Italian tennis player succumbed only in the penultimate act of the tournament against Andrey Rublev, reborn after the victory over Sinner and winner with the result of 6-4;6-2 and a sumptuous performance on the Italian. Nevertheless, Italy can rejoice because the ranking speaks for itself.
Not only Sinner, new best rankings for the Azzurri
After the last week Arnaldi reached his best Ranking gaining as many as 17 positions and finally finding his way into the World Top 30. Best ranking for him but not only since right behind – at 31st place – there is Flavio Cobolli, back from a series of excellent tournaments and so ready to jump into the tennis that counts. The numbers of Italian tennis are clearly growing and Italy can count on as many as six Italians in the world Top 50.
Devastating numbers and highlighting the great growth of our sport, tennis has now become the benchmark after soccer in our country and the Olympic adventure also proved it. Jannik Sinner was not there, but the Azzurri achieved great results and two great medals: the bronze medal of Lorenzo Musetti in the men’s singles and especially the Olympic gold medal of Jasmine Paolini and Sara Errani in the women’s doubles, and now these great results in the ranking.
