Holland-Turkey, a quarterfinal that promises spectacle takes place at Berlin’s Olympiastadion: Montella dreams big.
The Euro ’24 quarterfinal program closes with a showdown between the Netherlands and Turkey, who at Berlin’s Olympiastadion are vying for a pass to what, for both, would be a historic semifinal. The Oranje, despite only finishing third in their group, ended up in the least competitive side of the table and in the round of 16 they thrashed Romania by three goals without conceding any and delivering their best performance since setting foot in Germany.
An almost flawless match for Ronald Koeman’s men, who had not shone in the group stage. Or rather, they did so only in spurts: in the opener they beat Poland in a comeback, then drew with France orphaned by Mbappé – the future Real Madrid player was absent due to a fractured septum suffered in his debut – and on the last day they surrendered to a surging Austria at the end of a nail-biting 3-2 win. The selection coached by Vincenzo Montella, on the other hand, had started with different premises and goals, dragged by its captain, Calhanoglu, and the young talents Yildiz and Guler, whose plays proved decisive right from the start. Turkey in the group won two matches (Georgia and Czech Republic) and lost only to Portugal, qualifying as second. But it achieved the feat in the round of 16, overturning the odds and sending Rangnick’s highly organized Austria home. Decisive was a brace by defender Demiral, who was later disqualified for two rounds by UEFA for a forbidden political exultation.
Holland-Turkey, watch out for Calhanoglu on set pieces
There are all the makings of a spectacular quarterfinal. Both Netherlands and Turkey in the first four games have scored and conceded goals with some frequency. And this is also confirmed by the numbers.
Both are among the top 8 in the special xG (expected goals) ranking: no one, for example, has taken more shots than the Netherlands (63), but the Turks are no joke either (57). As for the possible scorer, those who want to play it safe can again choose Gakpo. The Liverpool striker has been the added value of Koeman’s selection, not only in terms of scoring (he has already scored 3 goals). Watch out as well for Malen, who will start from 1′ after his double with Romania, and Xavi Simons and Reijnders, two who although starting from the back could make themselves dangerous at least on a couple of occasions (the Milan player is also to be considered as a man-assist). In Turkey, Calhanoglu returns after his disqualification: it is always worth betting a token on the Inter player, who can be decisive via set pieces, both penalties and free kicks. The talented Guler and Yildiz, who are likely to have more room to maneuver against a team that leaves plenty of space, will also try to show off. Finally, possible yellow cards for Turks Akaydin and Ozcan, while among the Oranje, Dumfries and Schouten risk a card.
