Holland-Turkey is a Euro 2024 quarterfinal match and will be played on Saturday at 9 p.m.: statistics, likely lineups, predictions, live TV and streaming.
Berlin’s Olympiastadion will be the scene of the least “noble” Euro 2024 quarterfinal, the one with probably the lowest level of appeal. Yes, because while the left side of the scoreboard has just staged real early finals (Spain-Germany and Portugal-France), the right side – with the exception of England – is teeming with outsiders. This does not mean, however, that the challenge between the Netherlands and Turkey offers little food for thought. Far from it.
The Oranje, while not shining, have succeeded in their intent. And that is to finish among the top 8 in Europe for the second consecutive time. Ronald Koeman may not be a worthy heir to Johan Cruijff and his “total soccer” but his Netherlands certainly plays more offensive and enjoyable soccer than that of predecessor van Gaal.
In the group stage, four points were enough (victory with Poland in the opener, a deadlocked draw against France, and a narrow defeat to Austria) to advance to the knockout stage, thanks to repechage among the best thirds. The best performance, however, the Netherlands churned it out in the round of 16 against Romania, overwhelmed with a 3-0 win without appeal. The great protagonist of the challenge – together with Malen, author of two goals as a substitute – was Gakpo, by far the best (already 3 goals to his credit) of his team in this European Championship.
The semifinal is a goal within reach as long as the Oranje do not underestimate too much Turkey, which made it to the quarters – the first time since 2008 – with full merit. The selection led by Italian Vincenzo Montella may have some limitations in non-possession of the ball (5 goals scored and 5 conceded in the group stage) but it has a clear identity. And by relying on the experience of captain Calhanoglu and the young talents Yildiz and Guler it is taking important satisfactions. Like the 2-1 victory over Austria in the round of 16, for example, with former Juve and Atalanta player Demiral on the shields: 2 goals for the defender, who will be absent against the Netherlands due to disqualification.
The latest lineup news
Koeman could give a starting shirt to Malen, who was best on the pitch along with Gakpo in the match with Romania. The Borussia Dortmund outfielder will take the place of Bergwijn, who was out with injury last Tuesday. The Dutch selector seems to have no other doubts. The defense will again consist of Aké, Dumfries, van Dijk, and de Vrij, while Schouten and Milan player Reijnders will be confirmed in midfield.
On the other side, Montella rejoins Calhanoglu – out against Austria – but loses, in addition to midfielders Kokcu and Yuksek, also the hero of the Leipzig challenge Demiral, who was suspended for two rounds by UEFA because of his jubilation recalling a forbidden gesture by a Turkish extremist movement (the Gray Wolves). In the center of defense Akaydin will return to pair with Bardakci, on the three-quarter instead both Yildiz and Guler will play from 1′, who together with Calhanoglu will have the task of triggering the first forward Yilmaz.
The Prediction
Three wins for the Netherlands, two for Turkey and one draw in the previous matches staged since 2012. The most recent ones date back to Nations League ’21 and ended with two home wins: 4-2 in Istanbul and 6-1 in Amsterdam. There should be no shortage of goals here either, considering that so far the two defenses have proven to be anything but airtight. The prediction remains open-we do not envision an overwhelming Dutch victory-but the feeling is that the Oranje’s greater experience at certain levels and the presence among Koeman’s men of players who can solve it from one moment to the next will end up being decisive in the long run. At least three goals overall.
