The former Ajax coach, however, has an ace up his sleeve: United, in fact, has played one less game than Liverpool and could potentially be +4, but that does not mean that the Champions League is in the bag, quite the contrary. Bruno Fernandes and his teammates remain masters of their own destiny in any case, and between now and the end of the tournament they will face four teams that have nothing more to ask from the league. The first is Wolverhampton, which, thanks to its success against Aston Villa last Saturday, achieved arithmetical salvation.

And they have been out of action for two matches in a row, a somewhat rare occurrence in their season. Ten Hag will rely on the Old Trafford factor: in its temple United has lost only once (like Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool) and is unbeaten even since last September. Always long is the list of injuries the Dutch coach has to deal with, lacking the two starting central defenders Varane and Lisandro Martinez.
