Manchester United v Tottenham, Premier League: line-ups, predictions

by Thorsten

Manchester United-Tottenham is a match valid for the twelfth day of the Premier League and is played on Wednesday at 21:15: predictions, TV, streaming

Old Trafford hosts the key match of this interesting midweek round and facing each other are the hosts Manchester United and Antonio Conte’s Tottenham. The objective they both have in common is to conquer one of the top four places, although in the case of Spurs, they could also be thinking about the title, as at the moment only four points separate them from the summit. Erik ten Hag’s team already seems to be out of the race, but they had the great merit of raising their heads after a complicated start, with the Red Devils who had started with two ugly defeats in a row against Brighton and Brentford. United are fifth in the standings after nine games, three points behind fourth-placed Chelsea (and -7 behind third-placed Tottenham), and are fresh off four consecutive useful results.

Last Sunday Cristiano Ronaldo and his teammates shared the spoils with Newcastle. It was a very evenly balanced match, which ended nil-nil, but there was no shortage of excitement, with both teams repeatedly looking for the winning goal.

Among the protagonists – but this time in a negative way – was the Portuguese striker, who was ‘caught’ by his own fans for stealing the ball from the feet of the Magpies’ goalkeeper at a standstill and running towards the opponent’s goal, on the grounds that he had realised that the extreme defender had immediately put the ball back into play. The referee then cancelled but in England they spoke of a ‘figurehead’ on the part of CR7. The former Juventus man, however, is expected to start from the bench against Tottenham. Conte in turn will have to do without Richarlison and Kulusevski, who are injured, and the disqualified Emerson Royal. Just like the Red Devils, Spurs are coming from four good results between the Premier League and the Champions League, and in the last round of the championship they defeated Everton 2-0: captain Kane and Hojbjerg scored.

The Prediction

We would say Tottenham for what we have seen so far in this first part of the season, but at home Manchester United is very solid – the only defeat was on the first day – and the many absentees that the Spurs’ coach has to deal with make us lean towards a draw. Both teams should score at least one goal each.

Manchester United-Tottenham matchday squad

  • MANCHESTER UNITED (4-3-3): De Gea; Dalot, Varane, Martinez, Malacia; Casemiro, McTominay; Antony, Bruno Fernandes, Sancho; Rashford.
  • TOTTENHAM (3-5-2): Lloris; Romero, Dier, Davies; Doherty, Hojbjerg, Bissouma, Bentancur, Perisic; Son, Kane.
